Imagine, if you will, living in the jungle in one of the four corners of the earth, teaching literacy, administering medical helps, and systematically teaching the Great News of Jesus—all with the objective of bringing tribal folks into a worship relationship with the Creator. As you tackle this huge task, you also understand that this represents not all of, but a part of, your ministry. Another important, but sometimes intimidating aspect of your ministry is providing high quality care and education for your children, preparing them for the day when they leave the nest to engage the world without you. Are you adequately prepared for these vital responsibilities?

On Saturday, November 8, five dads and fourteen moms–all future tribal church planters–gathered to learn the basics of home schooling while engaged in a tribal ministry. A central theme in the Home School Workshop, given by NTM-USA’s MK Education Center staff, was underscored by the question: “What will your children be able to do after they leave your home?” Attendees were challenged to keep their children’s futures in mind so that the most options possible would be available to them, whether it be university, Bible school, community college, entering the work force, technical school, and/or returning to the ministry.

In addition to addressing philosophical approaches to their children’s care and education, the “nuts and bolts” of choosing curriculum, setting up a weekly and daily schedule, lesson planning, keeping thorough records, and providing adequate social opportunities were presented. Tips on how to balance the two major tasks of tribal ministry and home schooling were discussed, including where to seek support and help in these challenging endeavors.

How important is preparing church planters to home school? Succinctly put, without proper equipping, the outcomes are rarely positive. Poor MK (missionary kid) education, burned out missionaries, hindered or stopped tribal ministry are all possibilities. We are passionate about seeking the opposite: high quality education, healthy and vibrant missionaries, and fully functioning tribal churches. Currently, just under half of NTM-USA missionary kids are acquiring their education at home, which makes the job of ensuring excellent home schooling preparation a significant aspect of the tribal church planting effort.

Sue Lotz and Terri Harmon comprise the Home School support team of NTM-USA’s MK Care and Education Department. Pray for them as they prepare the next generation of missionaries to provide excellence in MK home schooling as well as provide support for those already ministering overseas.
