My thoughts are a jumbled mess these days. I start writing and keep erasing because what I write is not exactly what I want to say. I want to be able to communicate so many things, but it ends up sounding like my thoughts are all running together.
I want you to know the people who are becoming so close to our hearts even though you’re far away. I want you to ache with sadness for them as they are completely caught up in a lifestyle and religion that gives them no hope and no peace. I want you to hurt like me when you see them beating their wives and children, when they lie and steal. There’s so many things I can’t adequately describe. Read the rest of this entry »

Taking Moustapha to the hospital to be examined
I sat at the local hospital the other day thinking to myself, “how would I begin to describe this to people at home?” Then I sat there thinking about how amazingly blessed we as Americans are for the health care we have at our disposal. Calling and make an appointment, or even better yet, to be able to rush to an emergency room when someone is dying; to have a waiting room with seats, away from the flies and scorching sun; to have medicines and medical equipment – these are all privileges that don’t exist here in our part of Guinea. I know it could sound like I’m just trying to make people feel guilty in light of all the complaints about health care in the States. Okay, maybe I am, a little. I get that there is a lot of issues involved – issues that admittedly, I am not keeping up on over here. But, I would venture a guess that if most Americans could come and experience health care here just one time – the complaints would stop. Read the rest of this entry »

Moustapha and I sitting outside his house
I have a new name these days. In the village, I’m trying to get used to hearing my new African name being called out. I usually have to hear it a few times before I remember “oh, wait, that’s me!” It’s a normal custom for the missionaries here to take on an African name – believe me, Cretsinger is not a name easily pronounced around here. Along with a new first name, usually a family will bestow their last name on the missionary as well. I have been praying for strong friendships in the village, despite the language and culture barriers. I know that there are obstacles, but I have been praying that God would give me ladies that I would be able to just go to their house anytime and visit without needing a reason to come. I’m not normally an outgoing person – it takes me a long time to come out of my shell with new people, so this is a big prayer request for me. I have been trying to leave my comfort zone more and more to try and bring out these new relationships. I am thankful to see God answering this prayer. I have seen little things happening that give me the confidence to keep going in this. The other day I was in the village visiting with my friend, Fatou, when her family started talking amongst themselves that I didn’t have an African name and they wanted to give me their family name so that I would be a part of them. One of them even gave me her first name so that now I’m her namesake. It’s their way of saying “welcome, be a part of us, spend time with our family”…this is what I’ve been wanting to see happen and so I’m thankful. Thankful that God knows the desires of my heart and He encourages me in small ways.

Micah back in gym class - feeling much better these days...
I love going to other friends blogs and reading about what’s in happening in their lives RIGHT then…that day…at that moment. Almost like they are writing in a journal. I read them and think how much I would like to do that same thing. Then two weeks go by and I still haven’t updated our site. I used to think I should keep it just for posting an article when we do something really interesting, or totally African, so that it would be worth sitting here reading. But, I like this new look of our website and it only makes me think of other friends “journaling” sites even more, so I’m going to give it a try. Try to be more faithful in just writing what’s happening in our lives – even if it seems totally boring. Lots of people say to my parents that they think their lives are just too boring to write us about. Well, I’m giving you permission to write about ANYTHING. You have no idea how much I love to get emails from home. It’s easy to feel cut off and isolated over here…so, really, write about anything! Read the rest of this entry »

Micah and Ephraim trying to get through the fevers and headaches.
I’m tired. I’m longing for a few days of vacation. Our boys came down with malaria a few days ago and there hasn’t been much rest since then. I miss being home in the States where you just go to the doctor and get a prescription for the problem. Here we are just trying to diagnosis it on our own and pick what what we pray is the right medicine. Ephraim is so rarely sick that this has been especially hard on him. He just cries uncontrollably a lot and doesn’t want me to leave his side. We have given the treatment to both of them and are waiting for it to take full effect. We think it’s working because they can go longer and longer without taking more ibuprofen, but the symptoms all come back after a few hours without it. They both have a hard time keeping food down, the chills are hard especially on Micah, and Ephraim cries that his head is hurting him very badly. We continue to just pray for the wisdom to do what’s best for them. We thank you for continuing to pray for our little guys. It’s been a long, hard week and we all need sleep and rest.
You can also be praying for all the kids here in the village around us as many of them are sick with malaria as well. Read the rest of this entry »

A friend, who works with me here on the center, with her two daughters
Our mission center sits just outside a village and there are many people from the village who work here on the center. Since we’ve only been here a couple of months, I am just beginning to learn everyone’s names and who they are related to in the village. Steve and I have such a desire to not just simply know “who” they are, but to truly begin developing strong relationships with the people in the village. I’m so thankful for a friend who has been taking me for walks into the village, showing me where everyone lives, stopping to greet and introduce to me to those living here. She has been here for 12 years and has spent years studying their tribal language. I have to settle for speaking in French, to those who can understand French at all. But, my friend, Ans, assures me that they are pleased to just have me coming by to greet them even if they can’t speak French back to me. I truly enjoy these times in the village and am pleased to be learning more about my neighbors. Even though there are many that I can’t communicate with verbally, I pray that they will see my heart and that I will show them the love of Christ through my actions.

We absolutely love getting packages from home! It’s so encouraging to open those boxes and see notes, treats, pictures, and other great stuff that has been sent from all over the states. Our boys are always so thrilled to see food from home and treats to share with their friends.

Such a happy day when packages arrive from the States
We are so thankful for my mom and dad who work hard to pack everything up and send it all to us. I can’t imagine how many times my mom has run to Target to get me just “one more thing”. She’s amazing. We know that there are so many people who take some time and pick up something for us and put it in our bin at church or mail it my mom. You have no idea what an encouragement and blessing you are to us. Steve and I never take for granted what an amazing team we have standing behind us in prayer, in giving and amazing packages!

Happy Birthday Cutie!
A year ago we were still trying to get our bearings in this new country. We were working hard to get to know our host family who were also our neighbors. We were eager for their new little baby to born – little did we know at the time, how involved with that we would be! One night we were awakened by our host telling us that we needed to get his wife to the hospital RIGHT NOW. The problem: the hospital is an hour drive away. They didn’t quite make it before little Ronnie (named after a missionary here) made his appearance. Steve said it was completely terrifying to be driving while a woman sits in the seat next to you giving birth!
We’ve loved being a part of this baby’s life this year. From the beginning he has been cuddly, smiley and so good natured. I have loved having him with us for hours every day and sharing in all his “firsts”.
Fast forward a year and here we are celebrating his first birthday. Read the rest of this entry »

Micah and Malachi on the first day of school. Steve's first day of teaching the high school students.
I remember thinking back in May that summer was going to be SO long – three months – how would I keep them all occupied during those long days??? There is virtually no where to go, and nothing out of the day to day routine to do. Just me and the boys all summer hanging out here at the mission center as they watched most of their friends head back to the States. But, much to my surprise, this time seems to have gone by quickly. Read the rest of this entry »

Micah, Malachi and their friends, Corbin and Elijah, celebrating Micah's birthday.
With feet already bigger than mine and working hard to surpass me in height too, it’s obvious Micah is growing up too fast. My mom back in the states tells him all the time on skype to stop growing and stay her little guy. Well, unfortunately, there’s not much chance to that happening. Micah is turning into a little man and is such an amazing blessing to Steve and I. He is always eager to help us with different things and is a great big brother. Micah has such a heart for other people and I’m always so proud of the way that he seeks to make others feel comfortable. Read the rest of this entry »
