First Mengen Baptism

Posted in Uncategorized on Aug 26th, 2010 | Discuss This Post

Hi Friends,

It’s with great joy that we can tell you that the first Mengen Baptism has taken place this past Sunday. We found a beautiful spot at the river and 17 of our 40 new believers were baptized! This was a big step for them to stand in defiance in the midst of a hostile culture. Many have had death threats and have been told that the local shaman will be trying to work magic to make their children sick and die. Normally in this culture when the shaman speaks the people do whatever he says as they are so fearful of the spirits and his power. One lady Kariang who Annika learns language with said publically as part of her testimony that she will rather follow her Savior than listen to the threats that men can make. She lives at the village above ours, her family are the only believers and fierce stiff persecution. Our first Mengen believer to be baptized was Edward, prior to being saved he and his friend Bruce were two of the biggest thieves and rascals in the village. Edward came out of the water clapping his hands and had the biggest smile on his face I have ever seen at a baptism. Bruce and Edward our now two of our most zealous believers blazing a trail for the rest and are being disciple for leadership in these days. After the baptismal service our believers seem bolder than ever about proclaiming their faith. People come down from the villages on the ridge and asked who got baptized our believers stand up and say “I did” and give their testimony. More and now lining up to be baptized and we hope to have another service this month. Thanks for being a part of the work here amongst the Mengen people! Pray for them,

Simon, Annika, Nya and Noah

language earthquakes and going to the toilet……

Posted in Uncategorized on Aug 9th, 2010 | Discuss This Post

Hi friends,

We have now been living amongst the Mengen people for 1 month and our first stage of work is completed, although there is still much finishing work to be done on the house. We are a week into language study. Annika is doing about 20hrs per week just now in language and Simon is aiming at 50hrs. This will change as we adjust to life in the village and assess our family’s needs. Nya and Noah are loving life here and the freedom that goes with it; they love playing with the Laureti kids and with Amy, one of the kids from the Wright family. Nya is great friends with Liam who is just six months younger than her. They get up to so much mischief together – recently we found them completely grey from head to toe covered in the contents of half a cement bag. They love going to pig kills and eating all the village food, they find it all very interesting. Nya and Noah love coming with us to the village to visit all our friends, they receive lots of attention and chase the dogs and pigs endlessly! So many of you have been asking what our house looks like and we hope to get some pictures to you soon. Living in the jungle presents some communication challenges and so we can’t send photo’s by email but we will send them out on a CD by plane, but that’s only once per month or so. Our house has the outer shell complete and is 36ft by 24ft and one level. The kids room is 8ft x 8ft as is the bathroom and larder/pantry. The rest of the house is open plan. The bathroom and pantry have stud walls but are not completely closed in, so going to the toilet is a public affair just now – makes for a close family! :) Annika is being so good and patient as she doesn’t have cupboards or completed work tops for her kitchen and she is very inventive when finding places to store pots and pans etc. We have hot water in our shower and kitchen sink which we didn’t think we would have right away but God is good and helped us to get that completed and yes Mom, we have an indoor toilet! We are having trouble with driving rain flooding our house from time to time and have to make a plan to get that closed in with shutters or extend our roofs overhang. We have been having lots of earthquakes, around 20 or so in the last month we have been here, and we have duly noted that our house being up on 8ft posts needs some bracing to stop the sway that knocks things off our shelves. On a similar note the volcano has quieted down and is no longer spitting out tons of smoke and has been moved from a stage two alert back to normal. However the last time it erupted it did so when we were having these type of earthquakes. We will keep you posted; apparently it’s very pretty to see but it can also interrupt our supply lines as the plane can’t fly. Just some news on the church… in these weeks we are going through Acts and have been presenting God’s commands for the believers to be baptized. We have arranged a baptismal service for the end of August. Please pray that the believers would take their stand and be prepared to make a public declaration of their faith in Christ. Those who will be baptized will be persecuted and marginalized by the community. Many who worship the ancestors and follow the cults/old ways are saying that baptism will make their children sick and they will die so there is a lot of fear because of that. Please pray that God will help us to know how to disciple them through this.

Pray:

- Wisdom for Simon and Annika in learning language and developing friendships – to manage their time well between language and family.

- For our young believers as they take these steps in baptism and stand out in the community.

- That we will stay healthy and the kids will not be as sick as they have been recently.

- The Lord would continue to provide for the house so we can make it more livable!

- For Laureti’s as they plan for their furlough this year.

- Pray for us to work well as a team.

- Pray the Lord would make it possible for both of our sets of parents to be able to come out to visit us in the next year or so. We miss them a lot and they are making a huge sacrifice in not seeing their grandkids grow up. Pray that they might be able to make a trip out to see us! Praise:

- We are now in our house and have our own place.

- The kids are getting settled and in a routine which is making life easier for all of us!

- That we have started language and are building friendships!

- Nya and Noah are starting to get better from this cold/chest infection they have had for nearly a month.

- God’s provision in allowing us to move in and build a home.

- For each of you that are enabling us to be here and do what we are doing!

Because of Him,

Simon, Annika, Nya and Noah :)

Prayer requests

Hi friends,

We as a family go into the tribe tomorrow to finish the outer shell of the house. We are taking a team of missionaries to help with the work.
Latest news:
Our volcano that’s just accross the valley is one of the top ten largest and most dangerous in the world. It is now very active and under a watch at stage two – just means lots of smoke – but has the potential to erupt.
We are out of water in the tribe with it being dry season, so washing in the river and carrying water for toilet flushing is the order of the day.
Simon got back from a 2 day trip to prepare for the work on the house this week – it went well and preperations are all in place for this coming week! We took a team in from Valley Fourth church who are here – great team we praise the Lord for their testimonies and work.
Prayer requests –
1) quiet volcano as we work – has the potential to shut down flights.
2) Safety as we work and fly lots in the week.
3) Rain to fill the tanks but not enoughto disrupt the work.
4) Health and sleep for us and the kids – we have had lots of sickness recently – Noah has croup and is up lots at night.
5) Pray for more funds to complete the house – we are thankful we have enough for the floor, walls and roof!
6) Pray for good testimonies in the village as we work and start discipleship / building relationships.
Thanks so much for your prayers, we are tired but trusting!
Big updates with lots of pics in a week or so!

Love in our Saviors name,
Simon, Annika, Nya and Noah

Conference, God’s blessings and sickness

Posted in Uncategorized on Jun 4th, 2010 | Discuss This Post

Hi all, just a quick note during our conference time (which ends on Sunday) to say we are having fun and have been blessed by worship and the word which has been refreshing for all i have spoken to; what a precious time. More about that later! We as a family are sick and only one of us can go at a time to conference – please pray we get better soon. Poor Nya and Noah have just got over their illness 2 weeks ago and now have a stomache bug resulting in vomiting and diarrhea – no fever which is good. Nya has had it for 4 days and Noah 3 and it looks like Annika and i just started last night. Please pray we will get better soon, especially the kids and that either Annika or i would feel ok when the other is not. We have a family staying with us in our house we have to look after also and responsibilities at conference – pray we can fulfill these. Thanks for your prayers – sorry for any spelling errrors this was quick!

1st phase of building complete!!

Posted in Mengen, Ministry, Papua New Guinea on May 27th, 2010 | Discuss This Post

Hi friends, would you eat a caterpillar? We went into the bush the 17th of May as you know and returned on the 20th. It was another great opportunity to build relationships as we had a team of believers from the church in the village help us with leveling ground and digging post holes etc. We had a plan in our mind for what we wanted to get done as we had a deadline of the plane coming back on Thursday morning! We didn’t get our full plan completed, but God is greater than our plans. Greater than the building plan was learning more about the culture of our Mengen friends and how to work with them as a church planting team. That’s why God has us building a house and that was a great reminder – the pictures tell the story :)

Our day started with:

Loading upLoading the aeroplane – you may see the familiar face of Steven Thompson who came out to help us set the posts; Steven is from NewtownardsBaptist and is serving here full time in support ministry. Steven’s wife Michelle stayed at home withthe three boys. Also withme was Roger Deeds a new missionary to the field who is busy with learning the national language – He has a wife – Lana and two kids.

Nya & Noah update

Posted in Family, Prayer requests on May 16th, 2010 | Discuss This Post

Hi praying friends,

Both kids are now doing fine and are over their virus! Thanks so much for praying.

Nya is still ill with fever and just not being herself. She vomited a bit tonight but is sleeping better. More and more it is looking like some type of virus that is also upseting her tummy. Noah is also unsettled with a slight fever and has been up quite often at night not giving us much sleep. Simon leaves tomorrow for Mengen to start the first stage of building. They guys will be preparing the ground and cementing the posts for the house; they hope to put on the bearers and continue prep work.
Pray the kids will get better soon and energy for Annika as she looks after them whilst Simon is gone bush. Please pray for safety for Simon and the other two guys as they travel and work.

Thanks for your prayers,

Simon, Annika, Nya and Noah

Pray for Nya and Naoh

Posted in Uncategorized on May 14th, 2010 | Discuss This Post

Hi,
Please pray for Nya and Noah. Nying is running a high fever and Noah a slightly lower one (perhaps to do with his teeth) today it is getting higher. It is either a viral illness or in Nya’s case perhaps malaria. If she still has the high temp again tomorrow we will take her to be tested. We will keep you updated but would appreciate your prayers. Lots of love,

Simon, Annika, Nya and Noah

Posted in Ministry, Prayer requests on Mar 25th, 2010 | Discuss This Post

Hi Friends,

It’s been a busy period of time for us as a family; Nya is potty training, Noah is on his third tooth we have had a bush trip, and we are Laureti's house before..packing in preparation for our move to live amongst the Mengen people.

As you know I flew into our work a few weeks ago to renovate the Laureti’s into a smaller house; the purpose of this was to get us some materials to kick start our  house off and save us some money so we could move in quicker. You can see the picture Read the rest of this entry »

Update on Simons eye

Posted in Uncategorized on Mar 19th, 2010 | Discuss This Post

Hi Friends,

As many of you know Simon got a piece of metal in his eye whilst doing some renovations to Laureti’s house in the jungle. After some painful visits to the hospital in town, where they tried to remove the metal with a needle, I was able to have the eye looked at by a doctor. Daniel Moore from Carrubbers was here at our missions station doing a translation workshop, he was able to remove some of the metal with a needle but as we weren’t able to get it all out i had to go to Aus as the risk of infection was to great. I flew to Cairns and stayed with some NTM missionaries there; the hospital was great and gave us free treatment as we are from the UK. They drilled the metal out of my eye and checked it again  two days later; i was given the all clear and was able to return. I have to say it was very strange to be in a shopping mall and see a McDonalds. My eye should be back to normal in a couple of weeks, is feeling much better and is infection free. Thanks so much for all of your prayers and well wishes. Simon
