New York and back home

In the workings for quite some time, was a planned evening to share at Jenna’s home church, Northside Baptist in Liverpool, NY.  Therefore, mid October I spent a week with Jenna and her family in New York state.  I really do enjoy

going to people’s homes…it gives me such a deeper understanding of who they are and why they might think and act the way they do.  I found a sweet, loving family in going to Jenna’s home.  One day, Jenna, her Dad and I went up mount Algonquin, one of the Adirondack mountains of northern New York. We can trust the sun will rise each morning!

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.” -Proverbs 3:5-6.  Is this a familiar verse to you?  Please don’t let me fool you into thinking that I have conquered this area of trust in my life.  I, too, struggle with trusting the Lord at times as it seems there are always new areas to trust Him for.  I’m thankful to have memorized the above verse; it is quite applicable as we continue to seek the Lord.  Read the rest of this entry »

Pray! (please)

000_0072 Sometimes I wish the Lord would say “do this….for the next several months.”  Maybe at times He is more glorified when we seek Him and then make wise choices ourselves.  Pray that I would be both obedient and wise these next couple of months in my decisions and in the way I use my time.  Also if you will, pray that I’d trust the Lord with details ahead that are unknown.  I so often underestimate the power of prayer, but the Lord can move what appear to be mountains through prayer and dependence upon Him.  Thanks for your prayers!

It’s amazing how much our circumstances and the people around us shape our lives. I’ve so much appreciated my sister Sarah’s willingness to share her home with me all these img_62102months. Ever since mid January she has been super busy working full time and going to school full time. Read the rest of this entry »

follow-up:  I arrived just before midnight last night (26th).  I don’t think I could have asked for a better trip…thanks!

How has your summer been treating you? I’m so thankful that we serve a God who is perfect and sovereign. He is also intimate and desiring with open arms, for us to come to Him. A sneak peek at how much the Lord cares for us can be seen in Psalm 139:16, David says, “You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” This verse confirms in my mind that God is in control and knows where and how He is taking us!
I would like to give you a short update on a few things I had mentioned last month. The orange check light in my car continues to come on, but the car is running alright. The speed sensor and transmission are good, but supposedly there is a glitch in the computer. I’ve been informed that it’s not necessary to fix, unless it starts to shift or act strange again. As for my job at Starbucks, it is no longer. After several weeks of very few hours, I decided to call my boss this past week and request that he take me off the list of available workers. It’s all on good terms, but the Lord must have been closing that door allowing me to focus on other things. A significant amount of my time these days is spent with my Hispanic The ladies of La Iglesia Bautista Betel together for a mealchurch family here in North Carolina. They have been such a blessing to me as they are using me and preparing me in a sense for going oversees. I really need wisdom however in using my time and energy as I pursue the field of Paraguay.
One day people of all language groups will be present in heaven as Revelation 5:9b says of Christ, “For you were slaughtered, and your blood has ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.” Currently, there are approximately 2,500 unreached tribal groups, Paraguay has 8 of those. Although New Tribes Mission has been working in Paraguay already for quite some time, a recent nationwide survey revealed much work left to be done. After praying and trusting the Lord to raise up laborers in opening up these 8 new tribal works and then considering a possible influx of new missionaries, Paraguay opened a school for missionary kids in 2007. The task of completing the work in Paraguay will most likely take entire lives of commitment, but the light at the end of the tunnel is visible! One missionary to Paraguay said, while the political situation in many South American countries has made it difficult for missionaries to continue their work, Paraguay still has an open door. Come and finish the work with us!
Prior to arriving in Paraguay, my next step is a 9 month period of further learning Spanish in Chihuahua, Mexico. Before my arrival in Mexico, I need more people upholding me in prayer, encouragement and financial support. Currently I’m at 22% of the recommended $2,542 monthly amount. Although recent changes in Mexico’s language program allows for flexibility in the date of our arrival, it is Jenna’s and my plan to arrive this coming January. There are a couple of things I need to keep in mind in making plans and setting dates and ultimately I want to leave all that in the Lord’s hands as I obediently and faithfully walk with Him. Thank you for being a blessing to me and for your huge part in reaching the unreached!

Carlos & others

This past Saturday (5/23) a couple of the Hispanics from La Iglesia Bautista Betel went evangelizing in a very Hispanic apartment complex.  I came home a little discouraged as we distributed sacked lunches and tracts, invited them to church…but didn’t really get much further -conversation wise.  The next day 2 of the people from that apartment complex came to church…what an encouragement despite my lack of faith!  One of these (Carlos), made a profession of faith that day.  Pray for his growth and for both of these individual’s faithful attendance to the church.  Pray for others who are searching, as God is the one who stirs hearts and brings them to Himself.  Gracias!

so much to discover

Entering Ohio from West Virginia, a sign reads, “Welcome to Ohio…so much to discover!” True, true…for me it’s things like the hilly scenery, the Amstutz pantry, my uncle’s wood shop, Lehman’s Hardware and most of all a significant amount of my family and friends who make their home there. Dalton, Ohio always felt like home in the US upon arrival from Venezuela! The last week of April, I was privileged to make a trip north to this area of Ohio. Five of my Mom’s six siblings were able to make it out for a few days…only the doctor in AZ and his Aunt, uncle, cousins in Ohio family couldn’t make it on short notice this time. My aunt arranged a time one evening for me to share among family and friends. What a loving and faithful group of people! One lady afterwards told me that she saves all my prayer letters and prays for 2 of my requests each day – the first thought that came to my mind was how blessed I truly am!

Now back in North Carolina, I do continue to work at Starbucks however my hours this past month have been slim. I am thankful for the job, for the free coffee and for the few opportunities I’ve had to share the Lord there. Usually I work during very busy hours and I often feel like it’s hard to get to know the people or have valuable conversations with them. Pray that I would be used however the Lord sees fit to use me there!
I also continue to attend La Iglesia Bautista Betel where there are approximately 25-30 attendees. They meet at the English Bethel Baptist church and although they meet separately, they do consider themselves together one church. One of the deacons (pictured below) from the English speaking church oversees the Spanish From church: Josefina, deacon Ron, and Josefina group…he attends their service and although he doesn’t speak Spanish, the Hispanics love him and he has been instrumental in making them feel like they are a vital part of Bethel Baptist. I am thankful for a church where I can be used and also encouraged and blessed all at the same time. Considering the fact that I’m looking at the mission field in the near future and need supportive individuals and churches, I really need wisdom and discernment in partnership development here in North Carolina. It’s challenging, especially as I haven’t lived in the area for very long.
Another not so welcoming part of life these past 6 weeks or so has been numerous visits to the mechanic! Several times were due to a muffler issue, which in order to pass my car inspection had to be fixed. Then there was the orange check light issue where the problem couldn’t be determined. After having the speed sensor changed 3 times, the real problem appears to have been the transmission. After much thought, prayer, advice, I decided to have the transmission changed, opting out of purchasing a different car. It’s so hard, you hope your car will continue to run but you can’t tell it’s future, especially when it’s already been out and about 235,000 miles. Thankfully, the car in the picture is not my car, but it does make my car problems seem lighter!
A verse that I’ve been thinking about is Psalm 90: 12 “Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.” I do have the tendency to focus on temporary things….temporary things that might even be good. As long as Satan is successful in allowing us to dwell only on the here and now, he is happy. The verse is so true -I think one is very wise who understands his life is only but a breath in the overall scheme of things and lives like such. So my challenge and focus should be…how can I glorify the Lord best in the small life-span that I have? One thing I know for sure –time spent in the word, and in getting to know the Lord better…I do not regret!

Paraguay :-)

Posted in Uncategorized on Apr 7th, 2009 | Discuss This Post
For several months prior to choosing a country in which to serve, I had been praying that the Lord would direct me in that decision. It was this past November when Paraguay became the country where I would make plans to serve. The decision to serve in Paraguay was made almost spontaneously as it just kind of fell into place after my friend Jenna and I had discussed working together. That to say, about all I knew about Paraguay at the time was that tereré (an herbal tea) is very much a social drink and that there remain 8 unreached tribal groups that with sufficient personnel, will open within the next several years. Learning more about Paraguay came very slowly. I did check out a couple of books from a local library to get information on the country but most of the books said something like, little is known about the country of Paraguay to it’s surrounding neighbors, let alone the outside world. However, more than anything, although I was happy and excited for the Lord’s guidance in my life, my heart was not yet in Paraguay. Just previous to making the decision, my heart had almost been set on Asia and it was just around this time that I had also told the Lord that I would serve Him single on the field if that’s what He wanted. These played into the matter and my attitude was such that it said, I am willing to go to Paraguay, but just take me there without much effort on my part. After learning my heart’s situation, I was reminded of the story of Abraham and Isaac. The Lord asked Abraham to sacrifice his son, and even though the sacrificing of his son was obviously against his will, Abraham planned for the event and took active steps of obedience. He got up very early that next morning taking all the necessary items and traveled for 3 days until he reached the place where he was to offer his son as a sacrifice. For some reason I had thought that the Lord would give me a passion for the country and the people where I would go before guiding me there, instead I think He wanted me to take active steps of obedience when my heart wasn’t yet in the direction He was guiding me.
These last several weeks through prayer and obedience the Lord has been working on my heart and sparking a desire to serve Him in Paraguay. Gaining information from the missionaries in leadership in Paraguay has been good; I have found them to be very nice and helpful. I’ve learned quite a bit about the country as I’ve several times gone to Borders bookstore to look at a South American book containing substantial information on Paraguay. Also, one missionary to Paraguay has put together a DVD that I received in the mail this past week – a well done presentation of the needs yet in Paraguay along with many testimonies given by local Paraguayans. My heart is warming up for the country and people of Paraguay.
I came across Psalm 32: 8-9 the other day. “The Lord says, ‘I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. Do not be like a senseless horse or mule that needs a bit and bridle to keep it under control.”’
Also not long ago, I heard someone explain the difference between desire and lust. Desires are good, but when it has to be that way…or that place…etc, then they become lust.
This verse and the explanation of desire vs. lust are instruments that God has used in my life as He continues to develop my heart to be more like His and as He creates excitement in my heart for serving in Paraguay!
My desire, although this isn’t easy to share, is to be honest and to accurately state what the Lord is doing in my life. Later I will share more about the country of Paraguay:-)
