“Bilang telur naga” (”Tell her they are dragon eggs”) said the passerby to the seller as he spied me inspecting some funky turtle eggs. I smiled to myself, understanding his Indonesian and enjoying his joke.
While routine trips to the grocery store are possible, the local market provides a fascinating look into the culture here. Normal chicken eggs that are sold pre-cracked, in little bags, fish that is gutted right on the spot… Wandering the aisles, fresh, rare delicacies such as shark, wild pig, snake, and turtle meat can be bought for great low prices, provided you are willing to bargain!
