Training Future Tribal Missionaries

Almost There!!!!!

Posted in *Prayer Request, Ministry on Nov 6th, 2009 | Discuss This Post

Thank you so much to all who prayed for the Missions Conference dinner meetings I had this week!  They went very well:  9 my first night, 18 the second, and 22 the third.  I had very positive comments from all who attended, and have already seen an additional $125 a month pledged as a result.  There are still those who are praying over their part in my ministry, so please continue to pray for those who have heard the need that they will be open to however the Lord would have them be a part.

You may have noticed that the figures on my support gauge have moved around a little!  The mission continually evaluates our recommended support according to current living costs.  With the lower gas prices this year, my recommended support dropped a little to $2846 a month, down from $2970.  That means my “magic number” of 66% for return to ministry is now $1879 a month.  That means I’m only $264 a month short of my goal!

It has been an exhausting week, but well worth it.  It is amazing how much I walk away encouraged from “hearing” my own presentation!  Watching the videos about our tribal works and sharing my journey into ministry helps me remember why I’m doing all of this, and how much all the insanity and stress is worth it!  I know this is where the Lord has me, and the testimony and stories that will come out of this journey will truly be unforgettable.  I can’t ever say thank you enough for your partnership and support through it all.

Missions Conference Week

Posted in Uncategorized on Nov 1st, 2009 | Discuss This Post

A note of prayer and praise for everyone:  this week is missions conference at my church here in WI.  Praise that the church has offered to pay for me to host dinner presentations Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights before our evening service.  I’ve sent out email invites to over 400 people (our church is 6,000+), so please pray that there will be a good turn out for these three nights.  Please also pray that people will be moved by the presentation of my ministry and step forward to help meet the $400 a month minimum that is still lacking to return to ministry.  The meetings will be from 5:30 to 6:30 pm Central Time Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.  Your prayers before, during, and after are much appreciated!

$500 left to go!

Posted in *Prayer Request, Ministry on Oct 17th, 2009 | Discuss This Post

Well, Thanksgiving is exactly 40 days away, and I’ve got about 25 days to figure out if I need to reserve a moving truck and start packing.  I am pushing onward, trusting that the Lord will provide what is needed to remain in ministry, but I also know I can’t stick my head in the sand and pretend that moving could never happen.

Thank you so much to all of you who have been a part of more than DOUBLING my support in the last four months.  It still leaves me speechless at what God has already done, and I can’t wait  to see what He has planned for the next few weeks.  If you’ve been keeping track on the gauge on my website, you’ll see that my support level is at exactly 50%…a far cry from the 15% I was at a year ago.  In dollar and cents, I need another $500 monthly committed in the next three weeks to remain in ministry and avoid a move.  Broken down, it means 10 individuals or families willing to commit to $50 a month, or fewer if some can give more.  Please continue to pray that God will move in the hearts of His people to give their “best gift” to help me continue in my ministry to reach the unreached tribes.  Please  also take a moment and think about those you know.  Is there someone you could talk to that might be willing to get involved?  Word of mouth is an invaluable tool in any kind of fund raising, and raising support as a missionary is no exception.

Thank you for your interest, involvement, and for joining me on this wild ride called ministry!  If you haven’t had a chance, take a few minutes and watch the video I included with my last post.  It was a great reminder to me about the reality of what we are working towards—the salvation of the 2,500 language groups that have no Gospel witness!

My lifetime later…

Posted in Uncategorized on Oct 14th, 2009 | Discuss This Post

I was born in 1981.  It was that same year that the first missionaries went to the Higaunon Tribe in the Philippines.  Friends of mine, Lance and Laura Ostman, have been working tirelessly with their partners to see a complete translation of the New Testament finished in the Higaunon language.  Last month, the Higuanon people received their first printed New Testament.  Read what one of the women said just yesterday (from NTM News by David Bell):

Yesterday, Dag-ay, a Higaunon woman in the Philippines, had something she wanted to tell missionaries Lance and Laura Ostman.

“I want to tell you what grandfather told us,” she said. “Grandfather was a shaman and as he got older … he gathered his family around him to tell us what was on his mind before he died.”

“Now, you need to understand that we had been searching for the path of eternal life. We were sure we’d find it through the spirits who lived in grandfather. His words to us that day were both disturbing and prophetic.”

“This is what he said. ‘We have been searching for the way of eternal life but let me tell you all right now, we will never find it. At least not the way we’ve been going about it.’”

“I was young, but not so young I didn’t understand what he was talking about. But then he said something I’ll never forget. ‘We have told you never to allow foreigners into our community as they will just bring their foreign ideas. Before you know it, you’ll be wearing hats and shoes like them and that’s not good for you.

“‘However, let me tell you something that exists in the cities on the coast. There’s a book that’s there and when someone brings that book here, let me tell you, you must listen to it for it has the message of eternal life!’”

“Well, that is what grandfather told us and I’m so sad because of all those who heard his prophecy that day I am the only one who has listened to the teaching of this Book.”

Dag-ay added that there are two Higaunon villages that have recently asked for Bible teachers and that her grandson has been invited to teach in one of those villages.

Please pray that God’s Word will spread to more Higaunon villages and bring more people to place their faith in Christ.

Hot off the “Presses”!!!!

NTM has just released its newest video on one of our tribal works in Indonesia.  It is a short film, only about 10 minutes, and is the testimony of a new tribal believer.  Our team has done a great job with this, and I wanted to share it with you.

So What’s Next?

Posted in *Prayer Request, Ministry on Aug 25th, 2009 | Discuss This Post

Well, the May deadline has come and gone, and my support remained around 25%…what could God be doing? I know I said in my last note that sometimes God leads us to the edge of a cliff, and doesn’t provide the bridge until we get there. I’m coming to realize that sometimes He doesn’t provide the bridge at all…He asks us to jump. It makes no sense by human reasoning, and we have no clue why He asks that of us. All we know is that’s what He told us to do, and we must obey. Whether we perish in the canyon below or soar on wings like eagles is not the issue. It is about our obedience. Kind of reminds me of how a guy named Abraham was told to sacrifice his only son…

So, here I sit at the end of August…what’s next? In fellowship with my church and the school administration, the decision was made in May that I needed to have my support at $2000 a month (66% of recommended support) in order to return to my ministry. That really is the minimum I need in order to be able to pay the bills and minister effectively…without the added stress of wondering where the grocery money is coming from.  The deadline was also established that I needed to reach this figure by November of this year (6 months) in order to remain in school housing.  If I did not raise $2000 a month by then, I would have to leave the school until I did raise that amount.

Now, why are some of you just now hearing about this?  My desire was to speak to everyone personally about what has been decided.  In the past three months I have been able to do just that with many of you.  However, that has not been possible in some cases, so I wanted to make sure everyone is up to date on the status of my ministry.

So what does this mean?  Well, the last three months have definitely been a journey of faith…or perhaps more accurately, a “free fall” of faith.  God has done some amazing things, and continues  to do so.  In three months, my support has doubled.  I am now at 49%, about $1350 monthly.  What a huge answer to prayer!  However, there is still a ways to go.  I need to raise an additional $650 a month before Thanksgiving.

So, what do I ask of you?  Well, first and foremost, please PRAY!!!! I have seen God accomplish some incredible things these past three months through the prayers of His saints, and I know He will continue.  Please pray that the Lord will touch the hearts of those He would have to join my support team.  Please pray for endurance for me both physically and emotionally as this can be a pretty stressful time.  Please pray that the Lord will make it abundantly clear what His will is in all of this.  Please pray that my faith will continue to be strengthened and that I would be able to completely trust Him and His plan for my life and ministry.

Now, I have a question for you.  Has the Lord touched your heart now or some time in the past about joining my financial support team?  I’d love to talk to you!  I believe such a decision should be made with as much information as possible.  I want you to understand my ministry, my heart, and how you can help train future tribal missionaries.  Please, call or drop me an email and let me know you’d like to talk.  I would love to come to you personally and share my vision with you.

Thank you for your interest in my ministry here at NTBI.  Thank you for your prayers and support.  Thank you for your work on behalf of those tribes who have no voice!

The Race Continues

Posted in *Prayer Request, Ministry on Mar 6th, 2009 | Discuss This Post

Well, maybe not a physical race (Wisconsin in the winter is hardly the place!), but the race to raise my support to at least 75% by May 15th.  Things are really starting to get down to the wire here, and I can’t say the end is in sight yet!  The past nine months I have been on furlough to raise my support levels have been very different, but very enjoyable.  I’ve had the freedom in my daily schedule to get involved in a LOT of different ministries at church (spending 15 to 20 hours a week there) as well as travel when the occasion presented itself.  I’ve spoken at some conferences and visited some churches, and these next ten days are packed full with four church visits and two Awana Games appearances.  It’s really nice that I’ve been able to combine those bookings with a visit to my parents.
This year has definitely been one of stretching my faith as our economy has tumbled.  Can you imagine trying to raise support when a good number of people are losing jobs or taking pay cuts?  By all human standards, it makes no sense at all and is a completely impossible task.  I have even lost support in the past year, but God has been faithful to raise people up to fill the holes.  All things said however, the last nine months have not been as profitable financially as I had hoped.  My support has managed to hold steady, but has not increased at all.  There’s still three months left, however, and I guess God must have something big up His sleeve to solve all this!  I know from experience that He will bring me to the edge of a cliff, but save me just before I fall over.  Well, I’m on the edge of the support cliff right now, and I know He’ll rescue me, but it doesn’t mean there isn’t some fear involved as I stand looking over the edge.

So, please pray with me that God will reveal Himself in a mighty way as this year of furlough draws to a close.  Please pray that God would touch the hearts of people who would be willing to partner with me financially to see my ministry continue unhindered.  And, just maybe, ask Him how you could be a part!

Health Update

Posted in Health on Dec 19th, 2008 | Discuss This Post

I actually have some very good news to report this year! I can do nothing but credit the Lord with connecting me with an Endometriosis specialist right here in Milwaukee. He is world renowned, and did surgery on me in August. I came out of surgery feeling better than when I went in! Dr. Koh was able to remove some nearly invisible lesions that all the other doctors were unable to find—-in the area I’ve been saying for eight years was hurting! He also severed a nerve that will interrupt much of the pain I’ve experienced. Recovery was a bit longer this time, but well worth it. I am now on pain medications only as needed. I’d appreciate your continued prayers with adjustments in hormone medications. We are also working to manage the Fibromyalgia as I can now feel the symptoms that were masked by the strong pain medications. All in all, I am still in much better shape than I have been in years. Thank you for your faithful prayers through these years!

Christmas 2008

Posted in Family, Ministry on Dec 19th, 2008 | Discuss This Post

Snowy WaukeshaOh the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful…Okay, so I don’t have a fireplace, but the part about the weather is true! Merry Christmas from the wilds of Southeast Wisconsin. As I sit and write this, we are snowed in…even schools are closed today. It has been a very snowy December, and I’m especially happy to have my brother Nathan at school here to help dig my car out! Nathan and I will be meeting our parents in North Carolina for Christmas, and both of us are looking forward to a warm holiday! I’ll be returning to Wisconsin the first week of January, and he’ll soon follow to start his final semester at NTBI. I’m missing him already! It’s been so nice to have him here the past year and a half.

This past year has been one of change, but good ones. In May I left my job in the office for a year of furlough. I’ve been able to continue living in my apartment at the school, and really enjoyed the chance to get involved in many ministries at church and do some traveling and speaking. Despite the lack of a 9 to 5 job, my days have somehow still been really busy! I’ll be returning to my responsibilities at the school in May, and I look forward to seeing many of you in the next few months. I still have openings in my calendar, so if you know of a church, Bible study, conference, etc. that would like to hear about what NTM and our Bible School are doing, please drop me a line!

Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Laura (and Pepper too!)

Spring SemesterTime for …

Posted in Family, Ministry on Jan 31st, 2008 | Discuss This Post

1-31-08

Time for some breathing room!

This past six months has been quite a whirlwind. I don’t know where the fall semester went. Things were EXTREMELY busy in our office last semester, and it was a challenge just to keep my head above water. Our spring semester is now firmly underway, and our office is going very smoothly so far.

NathanLast semester, my younger brother (Nathan) came to NTBI as a freshman. It has been absolutely wonderful to have him around. He is so good to me, and it is such a joy to have family nearby again. He is living on campus, so it only takes him minutes to walk over to my apartment. He has been a great help with dog walking, car scraping, sidewalk shoveling, etc. He has settled in well and is really enjoying college life! It never ceases to amaze me how quickly he is growing up.

There are also some great things happening with our Education Department this semester. I now have another full-time lady working in our office, and in a mere three days I can already say it is amazing. Teresa is very experienced with many of the tasks and programs we use, and working her into our office has been a smooth process.

Now, you may be wondering why we’ve brought in another full-time person in my office. The answer brings me to one of the biggest changes. In a desire to facilitate my ability to raise the remainder of my support, NTBI is temporarily freeing me up from my duties in the office. This spring semester is one of transition, as I train Teresa in my duties so she can cover for me. Teresa and her husband are planning to head overseas, but have agreed to stay here until Summer of 2009. So, I have until then to get my support levels as close to 100% as I possibly can!

I’m already starting to see the benefits of having more help in the office. For example, I’m getting this website updated! It is so nice to finally have some breathing room in my schedule. I’ve fallen so far behind in what I’d like to do in communicating with all of you. Obviously, raising financial support and developing prayer support is nearly impossible on a schedule as insanely busy as mine was last semester.

I’m looking forward to starting these contacts and communications this semester, and once summer hits I will be able to devote myself to such things full time. Praise the Lord that the right help came along at the right time to allow this breathing room. Please contact me if your church/Bible study/etc. would be interested in having me come and speak or share my ministry. All of you who are reading this will be the heart of developing an effective support network. I look forward to communicating with you and perhaps being able to do so face to face in the coming year!
