Jason’s Graduation

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Today Jason was finally able to graduate from Emmanuel Bible College!

After three years of full-time study at EBC, in Kitchener, ON, Jason was short 3 credits from being able to graduate.  After talking with the registrar at EBC, Jason was able to count his training time at NTMC as his last three credits.  What a blessing!  So, this Saturday we celebrated his graduation.  He now officially has a Bachelor of Religious Education with  a major of Biblical Studies and an emphasis in Missions.

Congratulations Jason!

Accepting the cheque

On Thursday, April 10th, Jason and I had the privilege of sharing at our home church’s kids club (Countdown Club).  Each year they pick a project to collect pennies for and this year it was us.

Back in October we shared at the club about how we were learning how to learn a language and culture.  We got to show the kids some of the new sounds we can now make with our mouths!

Delena with Timothy at verse timeThis time Jason shared about how there are still people in this world who haven’t heard the gospel.  If we don’t tell them, they’ll never know the truth and when they die, they’ll go to a Christless eternity.  Jason gave some examples of our "Dobu" practicum (our teachers do role-playing with us) and the beliefs that they have.  The kids were spellbound!

Game timeThe kids also had a great time with Delena and she certainly enjoyed all the attention.  She wanted, very badly, to participate in the games time!

At the end of the evening, the 10-15 kids presented us with a cheque for $163 which is the amount that they collected from just bringing in their pennies etc. every week.  Thanks guys!

Ladies Retreat

2nd year ladies: staff and students

This past weekend (April 11-13) the second year ladies and staff headed out for our 2nd annual ladies retreat at the Taylor Residence. The Taylors are a family that let us use their spacious home for the weekend. We did most of our own cooking, but splurged and bought Chinese take-out for Saturday night.

Basically we spent the weekend doing whatever we wanted as long as it was relaxing for us! We watched movies, played games, made cards, went shopping, swimming and lots more. We had hoped for nice weather like we had last year, but it poured all day Saturday. Our spirits weren’t dampened one bit though as we found lots to amuse ourselves indoors.

There were only 10 of us to go in total (our whole class), so we all were able to have our own beds! What a luxury!

On Sunday we had our own little church service on the theme of “Joy”. To end the weekend off, we watched a DVD with Chonda Pierce, a comedienne. Not only did she get us laughing, but she had a great message on how our father, the King of the Universe sees us as Princesses!

I think everyone had a great, relaxing weekend. Thank you to the Taylor family for being so generous!

Summer Plans

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

Some air travel is in the plan.

What are you guys doing right now?
When are you going to be done the training?
Where are you going to live next year?
What are you plans for the summer?

These and more are "Frequently Asked Questions" of us.

Dobu

Tomorrow promises to be one just like many in the last month: training in culture and language acquisition. Truth be told, we are enjoying this portion of the training more than we thought we would. Every morning we head out to the bush for an hour and a half of role-playing. Our teachers put on their costumes and play the part of Dobu tribal people. We students get to "pretend" being missionaries. After our time in character, we head back inside to debrief. This practicum, and a week long unit on teaching literacy, will take us to the end of our training.

Graduation

At the end of May we will be finishing our tribal missionary training here in Durham. The graduation ceremony will mark another time of transition, this time from "training" to "prefield ministry" — seeing our support increased.

Moving back to Huron County

For June, July, and part of August, we plan on spending most of our time in Huron County. We are blessed to have church family and both our families all within half an hour of each other. This will make it easier for us to reconnect and visit with family and friends.

4-week Trip to Indonesia

Mid-August, all three of us are flying to Indonesia. Our goal is 2-fold. On one hand, we are wanting to be a blessing and an encouragement to the missionaries we know there. On the other hand, we want to be blessed; we want our eyes and hearts opened. Neither Angie or I have been to a tribal church plant, so we are taking this opportunity to see first hand what we are involved in. We want to understand better why what we are going to be doing in Canada is so important to seeing the lost reached with the gospel of grace. We want our passion and excitement to be put into overdrive. We are looking forward to putting faces to the names of our co-workers in the Lord’s work.

On our way home from Indonesia, we will be visiting family in Europe for a couple of days as well.

The Start of a New Ministry

Although we don’t know exactly where we will be living when we return to Durham in October, we do know what our ministries will be, and that we won’t be living on the street.

Just as I can’t wait to get to Indonesia, I can’t wait to get back. I am really looking forward to working with Dave Ducommun, the treasurer for New Tribes Mission of Canada. Angie will be first of all a mom, and as she is able, will be helping out in other ministries at NTMC.

Thanks for continuing to pray for us as we finish up our last leg of formal training.
