So Thankful to our God!

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Jack’s sister Cindy’s brain tumor proved to be 100% benign . . . and the surgeon told her it has a 100% cure rate with the surgery she had.  It doesn’t get any better than that!

We are full of thankfulness to our gracious Lord.  She is home and recovering well, and though she needs to regain weight and strength, she has an excellent prognosis.  THANK YOU so very, very much for your prayers.

Home Again

Hello! Long time no update. We are back in the "castle" after 2 weeks of house-sitting.

We had a sweet little Shih Tzu dog named Gus-Gus (named for the mouse in the movie Cinderella), and a shy white kitty who appeared just long enough to eat and then fled again. We had the morning newspaper, a gas grill, a hot tub, a DISHWASHER and lots of flowers. The central a/c was very nice, especially since 2 of the 4 window units in our apt. are on strike!

The waterbed was a switch. The first night I climbed in and Jack greeted me with "Ahoy!" Then I couldn’t stop laughing, creating waves.

A very loud tree frog, suction cup feet and all, camped on the sliding glass door one night. Other wildlife included 4-inch locusts eating the plants.  Elimination technique involved removing both shoes and clapping the soles together on the locust, being careful not to get squirted. :-)

We took advantage of the space and the china to invite friends from church over for dinner twice, Sunday noon and Thursday evening. Thankfully the only things we broke were a plastic butter dish, which we happened to have an identical one at home that we could replace it with, and a jar of onion salt. Most of the plants survived as well, much to my relief.

I didn’t get pictures because my camera’s not working right…one flash pic and the batteries are dead. Please pray about that because I really miss it.

We are preparing for school to start in less than two weeks! Still have supplies to buy, and more preparation to teach art class.

I have two new piano students, homeschooled boys about about 7 and 9. In return, their mom is teaching Danielle and I to do woodburning art. We are really enjoying that.

At a birthday party the other night, Jack met a guy shorter than him.  That doesn’t happen often. :-)

Thanks so much for praying for us, and staying in touch! It’s such a privilege for us to be involved in planting churches among unreached tribes.  A verse God has been convicting me about lately is 1 Corinthians 6:20:  "For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, AND in your spirit, which are God’s."  That means we don’t have the right to resent anything He allows, no matter how minor (or major).  We forget that at times.  But it is freeing when we keep it in mind.

Wow, A Real Office!

Today I moved out of the break room into an office, which will hopefully be my place of work for a few years.

The computer services department is in the midst of a remodel and the first phase has been completed.  During the first phase the area where my original cubicle was, was the area being remodeled, so I had to move out.  The only location available was a corner of the break room, so I got to talk to everyone as they got their coffee.  I was like the Copy Boy from SNL, except I was the Coffee Boy.  Hey, Rodd, the Roddster, Rooooodddd.  So now I have moved to an almost real office.  It has windows (with a semi-lake view) and real walls, just no door.  It is in an area that will only be minimally affected by the remaining remodeling.  This is my first office with a window, well ever.  Pretty exciting.

Now I really feel like I belong ;)

I’ll try to get some pictures up next week.

Children with Nannie Ames (Alice`s mom) in NH. (Click to see whole photo)

July 2008

Dear Friends and Partners,

In April and May, Jack continued to develop "Gravity," NTM’s new Web-based personnel records system, with Rodd Harris. They made good progress refining the design, transferring data from existing systems, and creating some Web pages. Jack spends most of his work time "cleaning" incorrectly entered data in the old system as it is transferred to the new system. Jack is trying to program "Gravity" to reduce the possibility of future errors.

Jack has also written most of the data entry procedures that will be called by Gravity’s web interfaces. The big task still remaining is to create web pages to allow users to login, and also enable them to select, edit, and create data. Please continue praying for wisdom, and that Rodd and Jack will not be pulled away by other projects, but will be able to maintain focus on Gravity.

Alice has been busy at the mission as well. She was able to play piano for the worship time of a translation consultant workshop. Alice also had the opportunity to be the pizza delivery lady for the school on one of the Pizza Wednesdays. And at the end of the year, Alice helped with interior painting at a work day to spruce up the school for next year.

Since our last letter, our church in Sanford has finished our AWANA year, and another Upward basketball season. These ministries kept us busy, in addition to our serving on the worship team. Jack was blessed by having one of the men in his Bible study get saved. It is a great encouragement to see others come to know Christ!

NH`s White Mountains are beautiful. From June 13 to July 9, we spent 27 days visiting supporters, friends, and family in New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont. Each of the four Sundays was spent at a supporting church, and we had a great time at each one. It was a fun and busy trip (close to 1900 miles traveled). Our initial visit to a church is like a "job interview." When the church chose to support us we were "hired," and now we had a "performance review." Are we doing what we were "hired" to do?

More details about our trip are posted on the News section of our Website. More photos are at http://picasaweb.google.com/acorbett30.

Jack has continued to be involved in the Orlando area SQL Server community (www.opass.org) and will be speaking at their October meeting. Jack has enjoyed the opportunities for professional development this group has provided. This is also an opportunity for Jack to meet unsaved people and be a witness for the Lord, and present the work of NTM.

This fall, Jack will continue to work on Gravity, with hopes for a release before the end of the year. Alice will be taking on the 3rd and 4th grade art class at LMCA, and Jack may be teaching 1st-4th Physical Education–actually using his degree! We will continue to seek opportunities to minister at PABC (our church) as well.

We will also start to work on Partnership Development here in Florida. We are 1/4 of the way through our four-year Associate commitment with NTM. We still desire to continue beyond that, but will need more financial support. God has supplied thus far, and will continue as long as we are where He wants us!

Praises:

  • A great trip to New England and back
  • Strength for Cindy (Jack’s sister) while we were visiting
  • The salvation of Mike from Jack’s Bible study
  • The faithfulness of our supporters
  • The faithfulness of God

Prayer Requests:

  • Peace and healing for Jack’s sister Cindy, and that if God chooses not to heal her brain tumor before July 21st, that surgery would be successful.
  • Wisdom in going forward with Gravity
  • That the Lord would grant us more support through Partnership Development here in Florida

Thanks very much for praying!
