Paatoma, Wikipai's brother

Paatoma, Wikipai's brother

Have you ever just wanted to know, “Why, Lord?”

Ever been in the midst of trying times or tragedy, and wanted to know what God was up to?

Wouldn’t it be great in circumstances like that if you could get just a glimpse of God at work?

That’s what Scott and Jennie Philips got.

Wikipai’s death troubled the young missionaries. Wikipai was one of the first two believers among the Dao people of Indonesia. He was a leader and a Bible teacher. He had just begun sharing God’s Word in another Dao village.

And he was one of Scott’s best friends.

“From our human perspective it didn’t make any sense at all but Jennie and I were resolved to hold on to the fact that God knows best,” Scott wrote.

An example of encouragement

"Let's see if there might be people that will be willing to donate just a few more pigs," Eyaka told Yanis.

"Let's see if there might be people that will be willing to donate just a few more pigs," Eyaka told Yanis.

Yanis was shaken and hurt.

He had finally found a young woman who trusted in Jesus in the same way he did. But when he asked to marry Unai, her father scowled and said, “No way. It’s going to take more than these 28 pigs to marry Unai.”

Her father’s words cut him deeply and shattered his dream. And that’s when his friend Eyaka encouraged him.

“I’ll help,” Eyaka said. “Let’s go to every village. Let’s visit every relative, even the distant family you haven’t seen in years. Let’s see if there might be people that will be willing to donate just a few more pigs. You’re almost there. Don’t give up now.”

Eyaka, full of energy and with a ready laugh, was the first Hewa to trust in Christ a few years earlier and helped the missionaries translate verses and lessons in preparation for teaching the Bible in his village.

Quick answers

Thank you for praying about Jackie and the week!

We’ve just heard that Jackie’s vision problem is harmless.

And this week is shaping up well. It’s been a bit less hectic than I expected, but more importantly, it’s been easier to find proper focus — on what God has in mind for the week.

Tribal believers say …

Ian interviewed Paiye and others in Indonesia

Ian interviewed Paiye and others in Indonesia

Would you like to be able to see and hear tribal believers tell you how faith in Christ has changed their lives?

You can.

In fact, you can have almost the same vantage point I had when I went to Indonesia, as you listen to Dagamee, Ediapiya, Iyodotabo and Paiye.

Brief videos of their testimonies (the longest is less than 2 minutes) are part of the online edition of February’s NTM@work magazine >>

You should feel good about that, by the way.

You see, I can – and should – feel good about sharing this with you, because I know these videos and the stories will bless your life. And because of your involvement in our ministry, you can – and should – also feel good because you are blessing others.

Thanks!

Keeping priorities straight

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

PS  Please pray this week that we keep a godly perspective and keep His priorities in focus, because it’s going to be an exceptionally busy one.

  • Ian is involved in three days of NTM USA leadership meetings.
  • We’re both attending a seminar Friday and Saturday.
  • Wednesday is our son Evan’s birthday.
  • Ian has to get Evan to his first week of spring soccer practice Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Ian needs to make time to prepare to start teaching a new series at church this Sunday.
  • And this is our week to run the high school carpool – Ian drives in the morning, Julie in the afternoons.

Encouragement, Part 4: But what’s that mean?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

One of the reasons we don’t really understand what the Bible means when it says, “Encourage one another,” is that there are not precise translations for the two words the Bible uses for encourage.

That’s why those words are translated also as comfort, exhort and help.

So let’s delve into these words a bit more and see if we can summarize what they mean, so we can get a better idea what the Bible mean.

Missions is like bagpiping

Did you know missions is like bagpiping?

Not just because they both attract some people and send others running.

Missions is like bagpiping because both take a team of people doing unnoticed things to bring it all together.

Our oldest daughter, Jackie, plays swing tenor in Rosie O’Grady’s Highlanders here in Orlando. Swing tenors are the ones who twist and flip and spin their mallets – it’s called flourishing. They also hit their drums now and again.

But there are also different parts for each swing tenor, and if a band is large, each drum is often tuned to harmonize with a different note played by the bagpipes. (It’s doesn’t take that many. Pipes can play only nine notes.)

‘A monumental task’

Terry Reed and Santos translate.

Terry Reed and Santos translate.

Did you ever study Romans? I mean, really study it?

If you have, you’re just starting to understand the difficulty of the task before missionary Terry Reed and his co-worker Santos as they translate Romans into the language of the Guarijio people of Mexico.

Romans is a complex book, presenting some heady ideas. But at least it’s put together as a classical argument, with one fact building upon another. That’s why you see the word “therefore” a lot. Paul establishes one fact, then moves on to the next one.

But I still find that I need to stop at every “therefore” and think through, “What exactly did Paul just establish?” before I can move with him to the next point.

Now imagine you’re a tribal person, (more…)

Painting by numbers with words, 2

A Mibu man teaches others to read.

A Mibu man teaches others to read.

In our first painting, you saw a picture of a man who had to resolve to wait for the Gospel to come to his people.

But why?

Missionaries had shared the Gospel with the Mibu people, and now the Mibus were reaching out to share the Good News with another group. Why couldn’t the missionaries leave the Mibus and share the Gospel with the man’s people, or send out another groups of Mibus to his people?

Because the number is two.

It’s not about the plane

NTM's first Kodiak taxis away from the Idaho factory where it was built.

NTM's first Kodiak taxis away from the Idaho factory where it was built.

It’s really just a big hunk of metal.

As cool as the Quest Kodiak airplane is – and it really is a cool plane – it’s little more than a bunch of aluminum with an engine stuck on the end.

What’s really great about the Kodiak is the lives it will help save. And I’m not just talking about physical lives.

And that’s what made my trip to Idaho worthwhile.
