In our last update we asked you to pray for good weather as Manubu’ Bible teachers travel to the seminar and also for good weather during the seminar. It is rainy season here and with many rivers to cross and a tin roof that makes a lot of noise when it rains prayer for good weather was essential. Thanks so much for praying. The weather turned sunny the day before everyone started to travel and remained sunny during the whole three day seminar and for the days after seminar as the teachers traveled home!

Forty four men attended the seminar. Ten of those are Bible teacher trainees. We studied about God’s Word and praise and thankfulness. Some of the men preached, and their messages were very encouraging. For example 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. And James 4:13-16.

During the time of partaking of the Lord’s Supper on the last day of the seminar Gene shared how 23 years ago when we first started learning the Manubu’ language so we could teach them the Word of God we attended a sacrifice to observe and photograph it. There was dancing around, and calling the spirits, and killing a pig and drinking the blood, and spreading of blood on the people attending. Some of the men attending the seminar were boys at that time and took part in that sacrifice. Now they are saved and teaching God’s Word, and we were sharing the Lord’s Supper with them. We all cried and praised God for the wondrous things he has done among the Manubu’.

One of the teachers commented that they seem to just keep planning more evangelistic outreaches but without actually doing them. He said it is time to get out and actually do them. Outreaches are not just a quick trip to a village to preach a time or two, but involve a commitment of years to see people saved and taught and men raised up from among them to lead and teach them.

Please PRAY for many more evangelistic outreaches to start and for many to be saved and to go on strong for the Lord.

Just a quick note to ask you to pray for the Manubu’ Bible teacher seminar we are holding here at our village January 20-22. We’re expecting 43 teachers coming from a number of different areas. The weather is a special concern. January is rainy season, but for the past number of years there has been a lot of good weather during this month. However, this year we’re having a real old time January with a lot of rain. One group of 10 teachers will be hiking through the jungle for more than a day to get here, and they have 5 rivers to cross!

So, please PRAY for good weather for travel both coming here on the 18th and 19th and returning home on Jan 23.

Also PRAY for good weather during the seminar. The noise of rain on a tin roof makes it almost impossible to communicate.

And, of course, PRAY for a profitable, encouraging seminar.

After the seminar, we’ll let you know how God answered your prayers

We received the following text message (translated from Manubu’) on our cell phone a few days ago: "Good morning, older brother. In the middle of the night while I was sleeping there was a large rat which bit me on the foot and I bled. And now while I am translating lessons a snake approached me and wound up around my leg. Maybe Satan is angry because there is a group of children and young men who have asked to be taught (the evangelistic phase of the teaching) starting this evening."

The message came from Dikung who is translating our teaching material into Cebuano which is the language of the non-tribal people here in our part of the Philippines. PRAY for him as he is not only working his farm and translating our lessons but is also teaching them to fellow Cebuanos – and more and more people are wanting to be taught. As the lessons are chronological starting from Gen 1:1 every new group has to start at the beginning so he has a number of groups going. There is a Cebuano man who was saved a few years ago through Dikung’s teaching who now wants to learn to teach and help Dikung. We don’t yet know his name, but please PRAY that he’ll become a skilled teacher and faithful teacher. Isn’t it exciting that more and more unsaved Cebuanos are wanting to taught?

We’ve asked you to pray for Tu-tu’ and Duan, the two young men Piduy has been teaching the evangelistic phase of the teaching. After completing that phase, two of the other Bible teachers questioned them, even asking trick questions to see if they understand. They answered everything correctly (of course only God knows if they believe what they understand). Please continue to PRAY that they will become strong servants of the Lord. They have now started listening to the second phase of the teaching which takes them through again from Gen 1:1 to the accession tieing all the types of the Savior and God’s plan of salvation to Christ. The purpose of this phase is to solidify their understanding that eternal salvation is by "grace through faith and not of works."

Now you’re probably wondering about the saber. The Saber is an MP3 player that is battery powered. The battery can be charged or the Saber can be operated via AC or DC adapter, a solar panel, by flashlight batteries in a holder attached to the Saber or by turning a crank. It will last 10 hours on one battery charge.

Piduy is in the process of recording the 42 lessons of the evangelistic phase and the 22 lessons of the next phase onto an MP3 recorder. Carol is editing the recordings on her computer with an audio editor – a VERY long job. Then the lessons will be transferred to the Saber. There are already two older men who don’t know how to read and at their ages are not likely to learn who are eagerly awaiting the completion of the recordings so they can use the Saber to teach unsaved relatives. One of the men taught his family years ago using a hand crank tape player and lessons on tape we provided for him.

We have bought one Saber and have another one on order. We would like to have a number of them not only so older men who can’t read can teach the evangelistic phase, but also to leave with the people they are teaching so they can listen to the lessons over and over again. We would also like to make Sabers available for believers who can’t read so they can listen to scripture. Please PRAY for this project and the need for more Sabers. You can see the Sabers at globalrecordings.net.

Thanks for praying. Hope you are as excited as we are about what God is doing here.

We have some exciting news. A young man, Pidritu, lived in our area for awhile, listened to the teaching, was saved, and attended our last Bible teacher seminar. He plans now to return to his home village (we’ll call it Lan) and teach the evangelistic phase of the teaching to some families there who have expressed interest in listening. As he hasn’t yet taught anything, some of the Manubu’ Bible teachers here in our village plan to help him. Piduy, the head Bible teacher in our village and our best translation helper, has bought a used motorcycle. His primary purpose in buying the motorcycle is so Manubu’ Bible teachers can travel to do new outreaches and also to travel to train new teachers like Pidritu as he starts to teach in his home village.

The real exciting part about this news is that Lan is on a river system where there are many Manubu’ villages. It is an area that we have been praying about for years – that the teaching would get started there. Gene and some others did a survey of that river system nearly 20 years ago looking to see where and how many Manubu’ villages there are. There are many. And Lan is by far the biggest. When Gene visited Lan there were about 100 houses – the largest Manubu’ village he has ever seen. The Manubu’ here say that now that village is much larger than it was then.

There are a number of religious groups located at Lan, but they all teach eternal salvation by faith plus good works, not by grace through faith alone.
So, please PRAY fervently that this new outreach will get going, many will listen and believe, and then go on to spread the gospel throughout that river system. We know that our enemy will do everything he can to prevent this outreach from starting and being successful. But, God has given us the means to stop him, and that is PRAYER. So let us PRAY.

There are a number of unsaved Manubu’ families up in the mountains who have been told by a shaman that a god in heaven is going to lower down to earth a big “house” which is called a salimbae. They are to enter the “house”, and the god will pull them up to heaven. This is a myth passed down from their ancestors. No-one knows what a salimbae actually looks like because no-one has ever seen one – not surprising when we consider that it doesn’t exist but is a lie of Satan! The salimbae was supposed to arrive in December. They forsook their sweet potato fields and moved up on a mountain to wait for it. They cleared a big area of jungle for it to land in. They sacrificed all of their animals. They have been following food regulations and work regulations that are supposed to make them good people so the salimbae will be sent for them. They are still waiting for the salimbae and are having a hard time because the sweet potato fields they forsook were wiped out by wild pigs. They have also eaten their seed corn and rice seed which they should soon be planting. And there is no livestock to eat because they sacrificed it all. After all, why would they need that when they were going to be taken up!

A couple of the believers from our village often visit them and have been encouraging them to listen to the teaching of God’s Word – the truth. One of the elderly couples waiting for the salimbae listened to the teaching of God’s Word several years ago all the way through the evangelistic phase and beyond, but ultimately rejected it. Please PRAY for these mountain Manubu’ people – that God will use this present salimbae situation to draw them to want to hear the truth. It is always exciting as we wait to see how God is going to use a situation like this.

What a delight to have 41 Manubu' Bible teachers attended a three day seminar.

This past year has been a productive time of revising our Ephesians translation and the Ephesians Bible lessons. We also revised our translation of Hebrews and started on a revision of Galatians.

Carol printed about 60,000 pages of teaching material this year.

But, the highlight of the year was our Bible teacher seminar from December 12 through December 14. Of the 50 Manubù Bible teachers 41 attended the seminar. 15 of them are new trainees.

As the Bible teachers gave reports of the teaching in each of their areas it was so encouraging to see them pushing on serving the Lord in spite of times of hunger and sickness. SEE THE SEMINAR PHOTO ALBUM

PLEASE PRAY

That all of these Manubù Bible teachers would go on strong for the Lord.

That the Lord would open the way for the teaching of God’s Word to begin in many more Manubù villages.

For health and strength for us to finish the work in the next 8 to 10 years.
