First Flight of the New Program

Thursday, November 12th, 2009
We are tracking the plane as Garry flies it to across the Visayas to its new home in the South Eastern Philippines.

We are tracking the plane as Garry flies it across the Visayas region to its new home in the South Eastern Philippines.

For the last few weeks Brian and the other NTMA guys here have been working hard to get one of our Cessna 185s, “405″, ready for service in a new flight program in the Southern Philippines. As I write this, 405 is enroute to its new home where it will once again carry New Tribes Missionaries to and from their tribal works. It has not flown in a missionary capacity since 2003 so this is an exciting day for us. Many pilot/mechanic teams have had a hand in getting the plane ready for this flight, and it was great to join that effort. (more…)

Maycie’s Toe

Monday, September 14th, 2009
Maycie dropped a drawer on her toe.

Maycie dropped a drawer on her toe.

I am learning a lot from Maycie these days and her most recent lesson is one that has left a bit of a lasting impression. We try our best to train Maycie so that she will be prepared to deal with things in this world, but it is always very evident that she has a will of her own. (more…)

I Love the Smell of Boxes in the Morning!

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

She knows the smell of boxes means change is coming.

She knows the smell of boxes means change is coming.

We are moving again. It is scary when Maycie takes a look at our boxes and then at me, then at the boxes, then at me and says very matter of factly, “ingna.” I have no idea what it means, but it is clear she knows it means change is in the wind. It is really cute to see her put the pieces together. It is also very scary to think of the impact this will have on her life as she gets older. So far she seems to adapt very well to new people and is very sociable which helps a great deal. (more…)

Where Have I Gone in 30 Years?

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Makati skyline from our window.

Today is my true 30th birthday and the first time in 23 years that I have celebrated it on the proper day! It is true that I was born on June 23rd, but I was born on the 23rd in Makati, Philippines, not in the United States. How awesome is it that this year I get to celebrate after only waiting 364 short days! (more…)

Preparing for the Next Move

Friday, June 12th, 2009

We plan to move to Mindanao at the end of September.

We arrived here in the Philippines last August and as we approach our one year anniversary our heads are already spinning with how much has changed since we first boarded a plane to come here. When we left California we had a set of plans that seemed like a very reasonable thing to shoot for. We decided to go with what seemed clear at the time and even signed a 14 month lease on our apartment. (more…)

Maycie Turns 1

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

It has been a whirlwind of a first year for Maycie! She has already lived in 7 different homes, traveled to 3 states and lived in 2 countries. She even has her own missionary visa for the Philippines! She knows how to play peek-a-boo in two different languages and we are just waiting to find out how many other things she can do in two languages! She has way more Filipino friends than we do and is practicing her walking so she can play outside with all of them. (more…)

Trip to Batakland

The Kalakwasan Church is Alive and Growing!

I had a unique opportunity to visit the tribe on Palawan where I grew up and where my parents worked hard to plant a church from 1978-1986. When we left the tribe there was a small group of vibrant believers there, but no established church or church leadership. It was a big unknown to us whether or not the believers would continue to grow or if they would be swallowed back up by their ancestral beliefs. It was hard to leave but we knew that God is faithful to His children, and these dear new believers were not going to be left alone, God would continue to be faithful to them. (more…)

A Year of Firsts

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

This was a year of firsts for us. It was our first time to live in a mobile home, our first time to live in a fifth-wheel trailer, our first time to live in a high rise apartment, and our first time to live in another country. Marunong ako kaunting Tagalog ngyon. It is the first time I can say in Tagalog, “I know a little Tagalog”. Maycie is our first child, we are celebrating Christmas away from home for the first time, which means we will start some of our own family traditions…for the first time. It is the first time we have been without a vehicle, the first time we have had a live-in house helper, the first time we have bought a fake Christmas tree and it will be the first time that we will have visitors.  Brian’s parents are our first visitors in the Philippines and they are coming in just a couple of weeks. While they are here Brian will hike with his parents to the tribe where he lived when he was a boy. It will be the first time he has been back since he was 7 years old!

With so many firsts it has been a bit of an overwhelming year. The list goes on, and it was longer, but I got annoyed with the word “first” so I decided to quit. We are excited for this Christmas season and sad all at the same time. Even though we have Brian’s parents here we are still sad to be away from the rest of our family and our friends. To all of you who we won’t see this Christmas have a Merry Christmas! Of course most people are just upset that they can’t see Maycie at Christmas time, so we put together an album of what she will look like on Christmas morning next to our fake tree. You can see it by clicking the link below.

Christmas is coming!

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Christmas IS coming and a lot has happened since we last asked you to pray! We have moved back into the Manila Guest House, then into a new apartment (which we absolutely love), Maycie has started crawling, Thanksgiving came and left, and now it’s December and Christmas is rapidly approaching!  Praise God with us for seeing us through our apartment trials, for giving us a family here to spend Thanksgiving with, for a healthy, happy baby girl, and for a needed break coming up after next week!
