On The Road Again

Posted in Uncategorized on Aug 10th, 2009 | Discuss This Post

We’ve been waiting for this moment since last December.

Nine months ago, after a meeting with our pastor and missions team, we decided to make a u-turn in our ministry direction (from support work to church planting).  Now we’re ready to head back to Missouri for our final semester of training at the Missionary Training Center.

We have had a profitable time connecting with our church and its outreach to the greater Fresno area.  We’ve also been blessed and encouraged by so many new prayer partners and financial supporters.  And most importantly, our families have enjoyed much needed time with the boys.

But now we’re on the road again.  And probably more prepared than ever before.  We look forward to seeing how God will lead and strengthen us for the task He has assigned to us.

Please pray for us in the following areas: that we would make the most of the opportunities we have for learning, for the new baby due by Christmas, and for our efforts in learning French.

Thank you for your faithful prayers and support for our family and ministry. We are excited to wrap up our final month in California before jumping on the next phase toward West Africa!

Here’s a quick look at the next phase of our journey:

August-December 09′- Complete additional Church Planting Training in Missouri, have baby number 3 by Christmas, and head back to California to say goodbye before heading to France!

If the Lord leads you, please join us in prayer this week for:

Travels…

We head out of town this weekend to visit family and a church to discuss what God is doing in West Africa. We plan to leave in four weeks for Missouri.

Our recommended support level…

We are presently at 50% of our recommended support level, and we praise God that he has brought us thus far. It has been our desire to be 100% supported by August 1st, but regardless of percentages, we are experiencing joy, knowing that the Lord’s provision is sufficient! “2 Corinthians 12:9a,10b,c- And he said unto me, ‘My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness’… Therefore I take pleasure in… necessities… for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.”

Endurance…

Not only for ourselves, but all of you, as our TEAM- that we may fight the good fight of faith, to stay focused on the prize of our faith, to run with the certainty of victory, and to not become weary in well doing. The Lord has and will continue to do marvelous things before our eyes- what a privilege to be a part of God’s-History-making in the world!

Serving together with you in the gospel,

Anthony and Emilie Marzett

Our time in Fresno is quickly diminishing and we are so excited to finish the last stint of church planting training before heading overseas. Your prayers have positively affected our ministries and our progress towards the field- thank you for your thoughts, encouragement and prayers!

If the Lord would have you join us this week in prayer, here’s what’s on our hearts…

August…

We plan to head back to Missouri in August to finish an additional semester of well needed church planting training. Pray that God would prepare us for this next stage in our journey, and equip us to be better prepared for what He has for us in the future in West Africa.

Manjit…

Thank you to all of you who responded to our last email and/or have prayed for Manjit after he clearly rejected the notion that Jesus couldn’t possibly be the only way to God following his profession of faith. We’re learning much from this experience.

I took the advice of those of you who encouraged me to continue meeting with Manjit. I’ve been discovering a lot more about his worldview and belief system. For example, Manjit has a very hard time accepting the concepts of “grace” and “salvation as a free gift”. Manjit is very quick to help other people, but has an extremely hard time accepting help from other people. While I was with him last week, I tried to help him sweep his floor and he literally snatched the broom out of my hand. I asked him why he would not let me help him. He told me, “If I let you help me, then I have to pay you back and I can’t do that.” I told Manjit that I didn’t expect payment, I just wanted to help. But he continued to take the broom from me each time I picked it up. Can you see how this line of thinking would lead to difficultly in accepting salvation from God’s judgment as a free gift? If someone does something nice for Manjit, he has this “have to” over his head to help that person in return. (I think we have the same problem understanding grace in our culture because of the- something for something- quid pro quo mentality). He thinks that he is obligated to get himself into heaven by helping others (Thus God would owe him for all the “good” things he does). Beloved, would any of us dare to say to God, “Here, let me pay you back for saving me?” (Although, in all honesty, influenced by my culture and faulty thinking I know I’ve acted this way before God.) If we’re obligated to pay God back, which is what Manjit appears to believe, then we would be right in rejecting “the gift” because none of us could even begin to compensate God for the price he paid for our salvation. But, praise God we’re NOT buying our salvation on credit (Get it free now and make payments later)! For then, the gift would no longer be a gift, would it? Pray that Manjit would overcome this barrier in his thinking when it comes to accepting the free gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord alone (pronounced “Man-jeet”).

80%…

We’re asking the Lord to reach 80% of our recommended support level by July 1st. Nevertheless, His will be done- He is faithful! Pray that God would continue to raise up the TEAM he desires to be a part of this ministry of planting churches in West Africa.

Prayer 6/7-6/14

We continue to praise our Father for all that He is doing! If you can, please continue in prayer for…

Manjit…

As you know, last Monday, Manjit placed faith in Jesus Christ as His Savior. We’ve been meeting this week almost everyday to discuss his new life and faith in Christ. Today, we read Colossians 1. Beginning each Bible study time in prayer, we ask God to open our eyes and ears to understand His word. Manjit reads in Punjabi while I read in English. I’ve been letting him tell me what the passage says and what he thinks the meaning is- then I more or less confirm or help clarify the meaning of what we’re reading. Today, while reading Colossians 1:23, Manjit told me, “You have to believe strongly- don’t move. I told you true- I believe in Jesus Christ. I can’t believe Jesus Christ today and someone else tomorrow… Stay in one place and put your eyes on Him. You’re not going to move. [If] Today you believe in Jesus Christ and tomorrow you believe in somebody else- [then] He can’t help you.” After he said this, I just stared at him and smiled in awe of God (partly because Manjit has never read the story of Peter walking on the water!).

Pray that God would give Manjit a deep hunger for His Word and that Manjit “stays in one place and puts [his] eyes on Him”. Also, we head out next Sunday where he’ll be getting baptized with two others who have recently converted from Hinduism- praise the Lord!!!

Em’s stepdad…

He is now scheduled to have surgery on June 29th to remove some of the tumor (a big risk)- pray for him and Em’s mom as they face this trial in their lives.

Learning French…

fun, exhausting, awkward… but well worth the journey! Pray that Em and I would progress TOGETHER in language learning :)

To reach 80% of our recommended support by July 1st…

We praise God for His continued provision. We’re now at 50% of our recommended support!

Thanks for praying!

Family and Ministry: One and the Same

The Boys

FAMILY NEWS

Emilie is now about 9 weeks along in her third pregnancy. Most days she’s feeling sick but nevertheless excited about the ultrasound appointment coming up. We’re hoping for a girl- but we’re keeping our expectations in perspective that God is shaping this little one according to His own wisdom. Isn’t it amazing just how intimately involved God is in our lives- we pray to our Father in heaven, and yet He is the very one shaping the life in the womb- what a mystery! Other than pregnancy, Emilie is a faithful mom and wife who devotes each and everyday to serving the Lord by serving our family! Anthony, Dante’ and Zeal gave her the ‘Mother of the Year 2009′ award this past Mother’s Day. She’s been the undisputed, undefeated champion since 2006 and is predicted to have next year’s award in the bag as well.

Dante’ is three now and his speech is becoming more and more refined. He’s asking lots of questions: “What’s that?” Which is always followed by… “What’s it do?” Along with the development of his mind and understanding of the world around him, he’s also learning why he doesn’t always obey mommy and daddy. We’ve been talking about the sinful nature with Dante’, explaining that he’s always obeying somebody- either he’s obeying mommy and daddy or he’s obeying his sinful nature. At first, we thought this type of talk might be out of his league, but when we ask him, he lets us know whom he’s obeying. Dante’ and daddy will often bring home flowers for mommy. So now, instinctively, whenever he passes by a pretty flower, the first thing that comes to his mind is his mommy.

Zeal is one passionate kid- and rightfully named as such! He’s walking and speaking his own language (which we call ‘Zealian’). He’s very independent, playing often by himself and perfectly content doing so. However, we’re trying to teach him to play with his brother. He enjoys watching his brother do his lessons in the mornings and is always ready for a movie. And he has his own unique contribution to our family- laughter. Zeal does something everyday to make all of us laugh. His favorite things to do are: eating, reading (looking at books actually), and running outside (we think he loves being under the sun).

Anthony is blessed! I thank God for His wonderful gifts to me- Em and the boys. Each day I awake, I appreciate more the diligence I see in my wife, who is always at it, and never quits until the stars appear. I find joy in being able to come home to my family each day after a busy schedule. In terms of what I’m doing, most of my days involve: outdoor ministry/evangelism, studying the Word, reading up on African culture, or studying French. I’m thankful for Em who never lets me forget that although God has blessed me to work for Him outside the home, I am equally responsible to make disciples of the two little hearts under our roof.

MINISTRY NEWS

Em will be suspending her babysitting job in June so that we can both apply ourselves fully in learning French using the RosettaStone. Between now and August, our desire is to see the Lord raise up the remaining 54% of our ministry support. We plan to share with friends, family and churches about what the Lord is doing in West Africa and how we plan to serve Him there.

From August to December, our plan is to finish an additional semester of church planting training before heading to France in 2010 for further French studies and ministry. Pray for us in this area- Emilie is due to deliver the end of December, and we’re still trying to forge a plan for our time in France. We trust the Lord to have these matters in His hands (Proverbs 16:9).

Pray for Manjit. Manjit is a Sikh man who the Lord is teaching through me for about three weeks now. Manjit wants to learn about the Bible and has many questions that his religion cannot answer. But just yesterday, when the Lord’s own words came to him that: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh unto the Father but through me”, Manjit realized that he would have to walk away from trusting in his Sikh gurus and the Sikh scriptures. He strongly opposed to this as I expected! He wants to keep studying, but at this point he is not ready to trust in Christ alone. Pray that as we study, the Holy Spirit would do several things: destroy the strongholds holding Manjit, reveal the truth to him through the Word of God, and that the Father would draw Manjit to Christ “as he hears and learns of the Father” (John 6:45).

Pray also for our neighbor who is reading The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus. This book ties together the major themes of the Bible chronologically from Creation to Christ. Linda believes in God, but doubts the existence of Christ. She also believes that she can get to heaven by being a good person- but she admitted, if God judges her by the ten commandments, she’s “doomed” (I had to edit her statement to make it writable). Pray that as she reads the book, God would make it clear to her that Christ is real, and that faith in His work is the only hope available for her to escape God’s condemnation.

This week, we’re praying for…

Our bestfriends…

God has provided new supporters for the Youngs this week and they are encouraged as the Lord continues to build up their ministry support team- please continue to pray for the Youngs as they seek the Lord for new ministry partners http://web.mac.com/the2youngs

Discipleship opportunities…

This week begins regular meetings with Manjit (I spelled his name wrong last week). He called last Friday to say that he has started to read the first 7 chapters of Genesis and he has questions. Manjit has explained several things about Sikh and Hindu beliefs- surprisingly, Sikhs have a concept of Jesus Christ in their worldview and actually regard him as the One God- with many little gods/teachers (85 billion to be exact) beneath Him (at least this is what Manjit believes- whether or not it applies to all Sikhs). Pray that Manjit would develop a healthy fear of the Lord during the Bible studies and that his eyes, ears, mind and heart would be opened to receive the Word of God- the true revelation of Jesus Christ.

To reach 60% of our recommended support by June 1st…

The Lord is providing and is also teaching about contentment. We have the privilege of asking Him for anything, but we also have the responsibility to be content in all things- 1 Timothy 6:8 says, “If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.” Thanks for your continual prayers- not only for our support level, but also for our contentment in Christ day by day.

Language learning…

last week the Lord provided us with a Rosetta Stone program to really get things going in learning French. Pray for focus and understanding in the language learning process. Au revoir!

We’re keeping it simple this week, but please keep Emilie’s stepdad in your prayers as well…

Our bestfriends…

Brandon and Heather Young are asking the Lord to provide 50% of their recommended support by June so that they can begin their ministry of preparing laborers for cross-cultural ministries. Please continue with us in prayer for them. For more information about the Youngs, visit: http://web.mac.com/the2youngs

Discipleship opportunities…

Thank you so much for praying for us after last weeks’ update! We asked the Lord if He would lead us to evangelize in the Spirit (rather than us relying on our own human effort) and He has answered our prayer in an amazing way! This week alone, the Lord has allowed us to share the gospel at a gas station and at the grocery store! Your prayers were answered. Not only is the Lord providing boldness, but it has been neat to see how He leads us into conversation with people with whom He has already been at work! Just this week, I was led by the Lord to meet a Sikh man (and long story short) he realizes that something isn’t right with what he has been taught his whole life and he asked me in these exact words, “Will you tell me what is true?” Pray for Manjit that the Lord would open his eyes, heart and mind to receive the truth of the Gospel. He wants me to meet with him everyday to discuss what the Bible teaches- once again, your prayers are being answered in an immediate and exciting way!

To reach 60% of our recommended support by June 1st…

the Lord is bringing it to pass according to His will- please keep praying- were currently up to 46%- praise His Mighty Name!

Prayer 4/30-5/9

Em’s stepdad with the tumor…

We thought he had surgery scheduled in June, but we were mistaken. The surgeon wanted the surgery to take place in June, but Jon needs to have income while he is in recovery otherwise they’ll lose their home. He has to find a job and work for several months before he can qualify for “paid leave”. Therefore, the surgery may not take place for several more months. However, he is keeping a positive attitude through it all and your prayers and encouragement have helped him in many ways.

To reach 40% of our recommended support by May 1st…

Guess what? The Lord provided 42% of our recommended support! This has been amazing to watch as the Lord continues to show His kindness and grace in answering our prayers. Our next goal is to reach 60% by June 1st- please ask the Father for this with us- we know He will respond according to His will and timing!

For our bestfriends…

Our best friends are progressing towards beginning their ministry with NTM by mid-June. We’re asking the Lord for 50% of their recommended support by June 1st (the amount they need to begin their ministry). They’re currently at 28.5% of the recommended support level.

Anthony, Emilie, Dante’, Zeal…

and now we’re searching for new names as we just found out we’re expecting! Pray for us :)

Discipleship opportunities…

Pray for boldness. In Acts 17:16-17, we read about Paul who was taking every opportunity to talk about Jesus and the resurrection with Jews, God-fearing Greeks, and even with Greek idolaters “in the marketplace”. As he went boldly, people began to inquire about the things of which he spoke (vv. 18-20). Then he proceeded to tell them about the God of creation and man’s need for repentance before God who will bring judgment upon the world through Jesus Christ, whom He raised from the dead (vv. 22-31). His boldness to talk about the Gospel brought opportunities to explain more about God, the coming judgment, and the wonderful salvation we have in Jesus Christ. Pray that we would always be alert and ready to talk about the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, whether grabbing tomatoes and bananas in FoodMaxx, or waiting for the gas tank to fill up at the gas station.

First a few updates…

After a week of sickness, the Marzetts are healthy again- thank you for your prayers! Also, Brandon Young and I had a very profitable time at the Harvest Gathering held this past weekend- we met Jared & Jessica, a couple who are responding to God’s call to serve him as missionaries. They plan to begin training this Fall with New Tribes Mission. Praise the Lord for raising up more laborers!

Please pray for the following this week:

Em’s step dad and the head tumor…

Thanks to all of you who had an opportunity to send Jon a “Get Well”/”Encouragement” card. He was very encouraged by this act of love and told Em that he thanks all of you for praying for him and thinking of him in his time of need. Way to go TEAM!!! His surgery is scheduled for June- pray that he can find work both before and after the surgery to provide for his family.

To reach 40% of our recommended support by May 1st…

things are looking up- the Lord has already provided 4 new supporters this month- your prayers are making an impact!

Our best friends…

our best friends plan to enter their full-time ministry with NTM by mid-June- please pray that God would continue to raise up the financial and prayer team they need to begin their awesome ministry as bible/missionary trainers.

Discipleship opportunities…

Thanks for praying for us last week regarding a discipleship challenge/difficulty. God gave me wisdom from His Word- and even thought it wasn’t easy to apply it, I can rest assured that we’re depending on His thoughts and not our own. Please pray that those whom God has given us to point to Christ would place their faith and confidence in the death, burial and resurrection of Christ alone for their sanctification and growth.

Thanks for praying, and as always, let us know how we can be praying for you.

Prayer 4/13-4/19

We ask you to pray for us this week regarding the following:

Our family’s health…

The four of us have had really bad colds and allergies for several days now- It just seems like it’s that time of year! Pray that Em and I will walk in the Spirit even though we feel terrible

Em’s step dad…

He has surgery scheduled in mid-June. He has been sick the last few days which isn’t good considering his condition with the head tumor. The last report was that the tumor is affecting the muscles in his face as well as his throat. Pray that his mind would be stayed on the Lord- this is the path to being in perfect peace

To reach 40% of our recommended support by May 1st…

We praise the Lord for His continued provision in all things!

Discipleship opportunities…

Pray for wisdom as we run into challenges with discipleship. For one, making disciples of Jesus Christ is no easy undertaking. We’ve recently run into challenges that leave us asking, “Lord, what do we do in this situation?” I’m obviously being vague to protect the privacy of others. Please ask the Lord to illuminate our minds with His Word and Wisdom in Christ to know how to handle various challenges that come. His Word is sufficient- Amen!

Presentation this weekend…

This week, we have the chance to share our future ministry in West Africa with hundreds of people at The Harvest Gathering- an event that highlights God’s work among various ministries in the world. Pray that our participation in this event would be profitable for the Lord’s work.
