A PINK HOUSE?

Ohoni`s house glows pink in the bright sun.

June 11, 2009

by Ian Fallis

It makes sense that "Pink!" is the answer when you ask a little girl what her favorite color is.

"What does not fit my worldview is the picture outside my kitchen window," wrote a missionary who has just moved into a tribal village in Brazil.

Just 50 yards away, Ohoni's house glows pink in the bright sun.

Ohoni also frequently wears pink flip-flops.

"So in my mind, there seems to be a trend," the missionary wrote. "The man likes pink."

But at this stage in her ministry among an unreached people group of Brazil, assumptions are a very bad thing.

Her family just completed moving into a tribal village, and she and her husband are working to learn the culture and language. They need to notice things like the pink house (although it would be hard to miss), and try to determine "why."

Perhaps Ohoni's wife chose the color. Maybe wives get to choose house colors. Or the people may connect the color pink with prosperity, and Ohoni wants to appear prosperous.

There are a number of possibilities, and each new piece of culture they decipher helps them move closer to the day they and their co-workers can clearly present God's Word to these unreached people.

And that's exactly the focus of their ministry, and the reason NTM's Missionary Training Center is being expanded: so more people can learn about culture and language, and other issues crucial to planting churches among the world's 2,500 unreached people groups.
