FILLING A JAR PRECEDES PLANTING

This Palawano man gave George and his son a tour of his garden.

July 29, 2008

by Jackie Fallis

Missionary George Olson, along with his son Isaac, recently had an odd experience with a jar while going with a Southern Palawano man to the man's garden in the Philippines.

The Palawano man led them up while carrying two coconut tree seedlings and an empty jar. He pointed out a specific spot where he wanted the Olsons to stand before he filled a jar with water and put a leaf in it.

Moving to where the Olsons couldn't see him, the man took a few minutes before calling over George and Isaac and planting the seedlings. He no longer had the jar with him.

On the way back, George asked the names of the plants they passed, and the man answered and told them a little bit about each. They reached where the man had left the jar, and George asked what it was.

"Oh, that's nothing," the man said. "Come now, let's keep on walking."

Is it indeed nothing? Or could it be a key to understanding the beliefs of the Southern Palawano people? George and his wife, Ginny, will eventually sort that out using techniques and tools they learned about in their missionary training with New Tribes Mission.

When the fall semester starts in August, 550 students are expected to be in training with New Tribes Mission, at New Tribes Bible Institute and the Missionary Training Center. Please pray that all these students follow through and are able to get to their campuses and settled in before classes start. Please pray especially for the students on some of their key dates this fall:

At the NTBI campus in Waukesha, Wisconsin, registration, orientation and a campus-wide kickoff are to take place Aug. 17. At the Jackson, Michigan, campus, registration is scheduled for Aug. 16-17, with the kickoff and orientation on Aug. 18-19.

The Missionary Training Center will have its kickoff on Aug. 18, with orientation Aug. 18-22.

Your prayers will also be valued on Sept. 4-5, as leaders in NTM's training program meet with representatives of the NTM USA Executive Board to plan for future expansion of the Missionary Training Center. The intent is to create a setting in which the optimum number of people can be efficiently and effectively prepared to join the team that is planting tribal churches.
