| Teaching phase one |
Tom and Jason, the Brendles’ co-worker, taught each morning, Monday through Friday. Each day they taught specific biblical truths and related them to the culture of the Siawi people. For example, when God makes a plan or a promise He always does what He says, nothing can stop Him. What about the Siawis? They make plans to go fishing on a certain day and are often stopped by flooded rivers. They plan to go hunting at night, spotlighting pigs in the jungle, but when it’s time, often they have no batteries for their flashlights. Many things stop them or change their plans, but God’s plans never change. He doesn’t need batteries, and floods don’t affect Him. The Siawis, being animists, naturally assume that God’s plans can be changed.
The Gospel was presented in Oct. 2004. At that time, there were new believers born into the family of God. Many others, who had heard the truth before, were reminded of Christ’s love for them. some of those professing believers realized that they had been relying on their good works for their acceptance before God.
A young married man talked with Jason a few days after the Gospel presentation. Yacob said, “Before, we thought that the teaching was about how to get stuff from heaven. We didn’t understand that it was a message about our sin and how God saved us from the penalty of sin. I understand now. You missionaries didn’t come just to give us things but to teach us how God made a way to pay for our sin.”
