DEATH IN THE VILLAGE

May 20, 2008

Wamioku died on Saturday. He was a young man, 23 years old. He had epilepsy. He had been on medication for his epilepsy since we have been back in the village, and he was doing quite well.

Wamioku came to the Bible teaching times. He heard God’s Word, but even his family did not know for sure what he understood and believed. He was not much of a talker.

Wamioku’s had two favorite things to eat. One was fish, which required him to swim and dive with a fishing spear. The other was breadfruit which required him to climb a tree to harvest the fruit pods. Neither are activities that I would recommend to an epileptic.

However, he was accustomed to doing those activities and he enjoyed fishing and harvesting breadfruit. Usually he was with somebody when he did either activity. On Saturday, he was alone. They found him under the breadfruit tree that he had fallen out of. He hadn’t survived the fall.

This has again brought death to the immediate thinking of the people. It has also given the believers another opportunity to stand for what they believe. Nokee, his older brother, asked me to pray that he would stand strong in his faith through this time. Those who don’t believe the Gospel are saying that this death was not an accident or the result of his illness but a result of sorcery.

  • Please pray for Nokee and the believers as they continue to draw lines of separation between themselves and the unbelievers.
