SORCERY MEETING

May 19, 2008

Sorcery is still a part of the Siawi culture. Darkness has blinded so many for so long. We have taught truth openly in the village here now for many years. The truth is not hidden, but some who do not yet believe.

Some are convinced that what we are teaching is just our ancestors’ traditions. Others are convinced that Satan is more powerful than Jesus, and they prefer to follow the old customs.

We asked you to pray for a sorcery meeting that was to take place here.  God answered. He worked even through this situation to strengthen the believers in their faith.

The meeting dragged out over two weekends. When we first wrote, the meeting was scheduled for that weekend. That meeting didn’t happen because the “glass men” never showed up. They are the men who can look into things and figure out “who done it.” We know them for what they really are - sorcerers.

Because they didn’t show up that weekend, only the people who were here and interested in sorcery talked. The believers were able to stay completely out of it.

The next weekend, the Church planting consultants were here for a wonderful weekend with us missionaries and the believers. The problem was that the sorcerers from the river also showed up and wanted to meet. This complicated the time that the consultants could meet with the believers. Some of the believers were required to go to the “trial” to defend themselves.

To make a long story short, the “glass men” supposedly found out who paid to have the sorcerers kill somebody. Praise the Lord that none of the believers were accused and that there was no fighting.

When it was over, the sorcerers charged a fee of the Siawis who asked them to come to figure it all out. Praise the Lord, even in this, the believers were able to stay out of it for the most part.

Many in the village still struggle with what is true, and the believers still struggle with their cultural obligations and the difficulties of living in a village that has some who have rejected the truth.

In God’s timing, during the week between the two meetings, we “happened” to be teaching from Acts 13 about Paul and Barnabas’ first missionary journey. Acts 13:4-12 tells about Paul’s encounter with a sorcerer. So we were able to teach some on the subject the very week they needed to be strengthened. Praise the Lord - He is faithful to those whom he loves.
