Our discipleship program is still in its infancy. Those who are coming want to grow, and are interested in teaching their families and children. As time goes on, hopefully, some may be willing to teach in a neighboring village.
We have started with a basic question and answer time. We asked them to think about what they needed. They have many questions and are expressing their needs. Our short-term goal for this discipleship time is to address these needs. In doing so, we are reviewing Phase 2 and Acts lessons.
The last couple of times we have gathered together, we have focused on worship and songs because they had asked questions on those topics.
Here is a rough translation of what Imen shared:
“My thinking is like this. Some of us understand and some don’t. We are in need of strengthening. How should we do this work? If I teach like this, will everybody laugh? We are afraid of leaving the trail and running into the weeds. Here teaching our families or other places, it’s not good if we don’t teach correctly.
“I have another thinking. How do we write so we can teach? What is the meat? My thinking is short when I look at God’s Word. I want to teach what is true and not run off into the weeds.”
Someliae also shared that they don’t help one another. They hear the teaching but don’t do it. They are lacking in strengthening one another.
Okwep also shared that they want to be “close to you, close to me.” He means that they want to have influence in each other’s lives, and they are desiring our influence in their lives as well. Okwep said, “Not only in the meeting house but in the village as well.” He is hungry for real discipleship that is related to daily living from us as well as from one another.
We still have a ways to go before formally teaching about body function; however, it is good to see a hunger for it.
These topics will take up many of our discipleship times as we seek to disciple formally in the meeting house or informally in houses.
