A NEW UNDERSTANDING OF CHRIST'S SACRIFICE

December 20, 2007

Never have I seen the Siawi people as excited as they were on Tuesday after the lesson.

We had postponed our normal Monday teaching so that the men could help us cut the airstrip by hand with grass knives in preparation for Linda’s arrival. (As you may remember, our tractor is waiting for a new water pump and fan and for the radiator to be fixed.)

So on Tuesday, we met for teaching again. The people listened as we explained how Christ compares to the Tabernacle in the wilderness, the brazen altar and the laver. Many of the people finally started to grasp the completeness of the finished work of Christ as we compared His perfect sacrifice to the continual sacrifices in the Tabernacle.

Though we have taught them of Christ’s completed work on the cross for sin past, present and future, the people continued to struggle with understanding the concept of a once-for-all sacrifice. Some want to take that for a license to sin; others, while thankful for Christ’s salvation from sins, continued to look for another way to “make God happy” when they sinned after salvation.

This time, as we compared Christ to the brazen altar and talked about the completeness of His sacrifice, we could see the people getting excited. Through this one lesson, we were able to address both ways that the people are misunderstanding and misapplying what they have learned.

As Jason and I concluded the lesson, the people began hugging us and shaking our hands. Never before have I been hugged by so many Siawi people in one day. There was even a little jumping up and down.

They were excited – and relieved – to finally understand that Christ has completely paid for sin, which allows them to be cleansed of sin on a continual basis. They know that they can now stand in God’s presence without worry because of what Christ has done.

  • Praise the Lord with us that many Siawi people are growing in their faith and learning to apply God’s Word to their lives.
  • Pray for us as we try to finish the Chronological Phase Two lessons by the end of the year.
