| Town market |
The biggest difference in PNG to us would have to be the groceries and grocery shopping. There is no Super Walmart here, nor is there anything even close. Most fresh fruits and vegetables are bought in an outdoor market as many of the nationals are subsistence farmers. In the market, the people selling the food sit on the ground behind their goods and have it displayed on a mat or banana leaves. They do try to keep it all fresh by occasionally sprinkling water on it. Unfortunately, their water is not all that clean so we must wash everything very thoroughly to avoid things like dysentery or salmonella. Most of the stores have security at the door to try to deter theft. At the meat counters, rarely is there anything prepackaged. The meat is separated by type on trays and you request what you would like & the amount and it is then put in a bag & priced. The meat is also named a little differently – ground meat (pork, beef or lamb) is “mince” ; tenderloin is “fillet”. |
