VIRGINIA VACATION

Black bear by the road in the Blue Ridge Mountains

Black bear by the road in the Blue Ridge Mountains

August 11, 2008

by Ric Bruce

Sharon and I have been a number of places this summer—from the muddy waters of South East Asia’s Mekong River to the cold Alaskan North Pacific and finally to Virginia Beach on the Atlantic. Virginia happens to be one of the best vacation spots on earth in our opinion. From mountains to history to beaches, Virginia has it all like no other state. Our vacation began at Virginia Beach, went west to visit old friends and proceeded north to Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Virginia Beach
Although the beach is where we were most of the summer, Cook Inlet’s beach in Alaska isn’t quite the same as Virginia Beach. Instead of romping beach trucks, sticky mud, and gravel there were tan lifeguards, brown sand, warm water, and sun bathers. Not really my thing, but Sharon enjoyed it. We spent two nights right in a hotel overlooking the beach renting bikes and making bobble head dance videos on Beach Street. Some of the live acts provided free by the city of Virginia Beach were really cool.

Heading West

When Sharon’s parents were first married they lived in Lynchburg, Virginia. So naturally we had to go see the old sights and meet some old friends. One couple we spend the night with hadn’t seen the Button family for almost 20 years! While we were in that area we visited Appomattox Courthouse, the site of the end of the Civil War. North from there was Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s home and the University of Virginia he founded. A short drive took us over to Skyline Drive and the Shenandoah National Park.

Skyline Drive

Is incredible. You can’t get any closer to hiking the Appalachian Trail while driving in a car. The road follows the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains for 105 miles with 71 beautiful turn-offs and panoramic views of the valley below. The first day we did an easy hike on the Appalachian Trail to the top of a mountain and checked into Skyland Resort late. The next morning we ate breakfast and hiked to a few water falls seeing snakes, deer, bear, and wildflowers on the way.
