It has been a fantastic summer, full of challenge, growth, and fish. The last few weeks here have been a bit slower, with fewer and fewer fish in our nets, but a thousand pounds or so a day adds up. We're most thankful for the safety we've had this season.
It's hard to explain what it's like to get paid for all your summer's work at the very end of it. Sharon gets a pay check every two weeks, but each year I receive a lump sum based on the number of pounds caught times the going price for the species when it was caught. The prices have been steady and high this season, and we're thanking the Lord for one of the best seasons for R&J Seafoods. My check alone pays for an entire semester at the Missionary Training Center!
The best part of this job, I've got to tell you, is pulling in giant king salmon. Today we caught four still alive and kicking in our net, and it sure was a great way to say goodbye to fishing for a while. The one I'm holding is the biggest we've caught so far. A big king can fight hard enough to leave giant holes in our nets. As we pull through the net we're feeling for something really heavy coming up or looking our for big king heads or tails sticking up. When we see one right by the boat we lunge over the side of the boat to bear hug it and bring it in.
The second best part of this job is the friendships. We have so many friends that we've met up here that we'll know the rest of our lives. Well, as usual we invite you to look at our photo galleries here on our NTM website as well as our Picasa Web Albums. What's Next Well, as usual, the adventure continues. This weekend is my brother's wedding! We're excited to be heading to Norfolk, Virginia this weekend to be in the wedding and to encourage them on their big day. They plan to go to Honduras next year to teach English and then finish training to be church planters with New Tribes. After the wedding we're going on a much-needed vacation in Virginia for a week. We'll update soon with news and pictures from Virginia Beach, the Shenandoah Mountains, and the Creation Museum in Ohio.
