"The king shall have joy in Your strength, O Lord; and in your salvation how greatly shall he rejoice! You have given him his heart's desire, and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah."

Psalm 21:1-2

FAITH@WORK - TODAY

August 11, 2007

by Debbie Burgett

Have you ever wondered what free fall is like? Have you ever wished you could find out? We did too. So we jumped ...

New Tribes Mission is a faith mission. This means that every NTM missionary, from the leaders on down, must trust and rely on God to supply for their needs, instead of depending on a salary. And for us, this has been a rare and eye-opening privilege.

We've found that faith is a lot like jumping out of an airplane without a parachute, yet believing God will catch us since He was the one who asked us to jump in the first place. And both the trust and freedom involved has been unexpectedly exhilarating. Free fall is everything it's cracked up to be.

But how does it all work out? How are New Tribes missionaries supposed to live by faith?

-- By sharing with others what we do and what our needs are and trusting God to work in the hearts of the hearers to pray, help and give however they can.

So, we're going to do our part right here ...

What NTM does:

Because of a very specific ministry goal and the specialized training needed to carry it out, New Tribes Mission is able to plant churches in the remotest regions of the world where civilization, conveniences, and comforts have not even begun to reach. It's literally dark, dangerous, and dirty work that takes many years. But in order to fulfill the Great Commission, someone has to do it. And our missionaries are both well-trained and willing.

What Rand specifically does:

He develops tribal software for our missionaries to take with them to assist in the enormous and amazing task of planting a church in a tribal setting. For a fuller explanation of his work, see our ministry page. click here >>

What Debbie specifically does:

As one of the writers for NTM, I have the exciting task of getting the word out of what is happening in these remote jungle villages as the missionaries begin to work there. You may never be able to visit these places yourself or see what God is actually doing with your own eyes, so I lend you mine. For a fuller explanation, see our ministry page. click here >>

Our greatest need and prayer item:

As one missionary wrote home: "We have a great deal of fancy equipment out here: helicopters, computers, a jet barge, bulldozers, but the main ingredient for reaching this old world for Christ is still missing. We need people."

And that is still true today. We still need all kinds of people -- people to pray, people to give and people to go.

Our greatest need and prayer item is that you would become one of those people today.

1) You could commit to praying faithfully that God would send more laborers into the field and also pray specifically for missionaries that you know. To subscribe to NTM's Daily Bulletin of fresh tribal prayer requests and their accompanying news stories click here >>

2) You could personally get involved in the life of a missionary family by giving to them financially. To find out all the different ways available to give to any NTM missionary click here >>

3) You could consider going yourself and begin looking into all the exciting options. Rand himself could use more programmers. For more information click here >>

Personal needs, prayer items and praise:

1) That God would continue to graciously and lovingly provide exactly what our family needs both physically and materially.

We have been so blessed by the special group of people out there that generously provide 63% of the Mission's recommended support level for our family of six. We couldn't do it without you.

Of course, the prayer item is for the other 37%! But if that never happens, no matter how tight things get, it will never be quite tight enough to squeeze out the joy. That will always be at 100%.

2) Mental and physical stamina and strength for Rand as he works long, tedious hours revising, updating and developing new additions for CLAware and other tribal software as well. He has an amazing work ethic. Yet, he also has an amazing family one too. God somehow multiplies his time and no one feels neglected.

3) Wisdom and accuracy as I write articles and news stories about the amazing things God is doing through NTM missionaries. I just want to do His phenomenal work justice.

4) That our whole family would hunger and thirst to know God more and to make Him known to anyone and everyone that we meet. Shane (18) has been reaching out and witnessing to a homeless woman he has noticed sitting on different benches around town.

So, that is faith at work in our lives today. And in the past eight years, God has never once been too busy or too distracted or too uncaring to stretch out His loving hand and catch us right when we needed Him too -- and not a moment before. People talk about "life on the edge." We are living it.

And maybe you would like to take the plung too, right from where you are. Faith is absolutely everything it's cracked up to be. With the sun on your back and the wind in your face, perspectives will quickly adjust, problems will shrink to their rightful size, and all the wonderful possibilities will come clearly into breathtaking view. I wouldn't miss it for the world. Jump!
