When Fred talks about tribal church-planting principles, he speaks from experience! Raised as a young teenager among the Piaroa people of Venezuela, Fred first watched his missionary parents in action. He returned to the US for missionary training himself, and then spent the next 25 years helping plant churches and translate the New Testament into Piaroa.
Barbara went to Venezuela as a single missionary and was assigned to the Piaroa missionary team. While she was helping Fred with typing the New Testament translation, the two fell in love. They married in 1964 and served together on the Piaroa team until 1985.
With the translation completed and 32 Piaroa churches well established, the Findleys were ready for a new ministry. Fluent in Spanish as well as Piaroa, they broadened their focus to include Venezuelan churches, challenging believers to join in the missionary effort to take the gospel to tribal groups. As Venezuelan Christians stepped forward to partner in the missionary effort, Fred and Barbara also helped start a cross-cultural missionary training program.
Now the Findleys have brought their passion for tribal-church planting back to the United States. They have seen God work from start to finish in establishing churches among a people group who had never heard of Him. They know it can be done. Excited about passing this vision on to others, Fred speaks in churches, conferences, small-group settings and home meetings.

Dan & Kathy Stokes: New Tribes Mission Since 1979
Dan grew up in Virginia and Kathy is from Michigan. We met and married while attending Piedmont Baptist College in North Carolina. Kathy graduated in 1970 with a degree in Christian education while I graduated in 1971 with a theology degree.
After college I pastored two churches in Michigan. Then in 1979 we entered New Tribes Mission. For 17 years, I taught doctrine and culture in NTM’s training program. In 1998 we moved to Central Michigan to work as Midwest regional representatives.
We have three daughters. Joy, the oldest, serves with her husband in Papua New Guinea. Amy is married and lives in Idaho with her husband and four children. Our youngest daughter, Faith, is a high school social studies teacher preparing for missionary service.
Our ministry involves representing NTM to local churches, schools and other interested groups. Over the past years we have traveled to Papua New Guinea, Brazil, Mexico, Bolivia and Paraguay with short term team of young people and adults.
