FINDING FRUIT IN A DROUGHT

Bag of Istak fruit - fruit in the hard times.

April 27, 2009

by Jackie Fallis

A drought in Paraguay made missionary Char Hunt, serving with her husband Jamie, reflect on finding hope even in the difficult times.

The Manjui people are struggling with the lack of rain. It means their gardens are dying and cattle are being sold off since the grass is gone. But one crop is flourishing -- that of the istak tree. Char writes, "It has a sour, mouth-watering, eye-popping kind of flavor. It is delicious raw and can also be roasted and dried."

It's a bit of a travel to find istak fruit, through thorn bushes and jungle. But among the dying flora, there is life. The tall istak tree stands in the midst of it all, limbs stretched upwards, providing food.

"God had given me a gentle reminder in His Creation," wrote Char. "God longs to use me to produce abundant, flavorful fruit, even in the hard times. In fact, he is using many around us to do just that!"

Please pray for those in Paraguay as they deal with the drought, and for God to use it even more to His glory.
