COUNTRY INFORMATION

home > paraguay
Paraguay, a small country in the heart of South America, boasts vast tracts of arid desert as well as lush green rolling hills. The Paraguay River, this land-locked country's gateway to the ocean, is the boundary between these two wildly different geographical regions within the country's borders.

Asunción, the capital city, a potpourri of modern skyscrapers and noisy traffic, retains the feeling of an era gone by with its sprinkling of horse-drawn carts, parks, flowering trees, and old Spanish colonial buildings.

Paraguayan women still make ñandutí, the delicate hand-made lace for which the country is known. Rich, hand-tooled leather, a craft passed for generations from parents to children, is widely available.
