As the Dinangat people of Papua New Guinea learn key Old Testament stories, they are seeing how they are a lot like the Israelites who promised to follow God and partook of His wonderful gifts, then turned from Him.

After hearing Monday's lesson about the Israelites' continual rejection of God, Jinongke, one of the village leaders, stood to challenge the people.

"We always say that we will do good, but we do not. When I see the Israelites' bad ways I feel scared because these bad ways are here as well. And I wonder what God is going to do to us. You all should consider this."

Jinongke continues to be an encouragement to missionaries Gary and Esther Smith, Jeremiah and April Markley and Ralf and Elli Schlegel.

Last week, when it was reported that people in other villages were laughing at those listening to God's Word, and other distractions were tempting the people to give their attention to other things, Jinongke spoke up.

"Now is the first time ever that you are hearing God's Word in your own language. Therefore don't think that you already know it, because we don't!"

This week, the Dinangats will hear more of the Israelites' history as the lessons cover the times of David, Solomon and the prophets. Please pray that they will listen attentively and continue to see their need of a Savior.
