Tuesday evening, a tragic accident in Mexico took the life of Mexican NTM missionary Alonso Cano.
Alonso was riding his bike in a race between Chihuahua and the city of Cuautehmoc, about an hour away, when a drunk driver tried to overtake the group.
The rear protection van saw the vehicle rapidly overtaking them from behind and began to move over the center line in an attempt to cause the driver to slow down and back off. The drunk driver forced his way around the trail vehicle and began striking the riders.
Of the twelve bikers in the race, eight were taken immediately to the hospital in Chihuahua. Five of the racers were released after receiving medical attention.
Missionaries Rob and Deb MacDonald, who were at the hospital until about 1 a.m., were told that Alonso was in critical shape and needed blood. At 2:30 Wednesday morning, they received the call that Alonso didn't survive surgery.
"This comes as a huge shock to all of us," wrote field chairman Kevin Gutwein.
Alonso, 35, is survived by his wife Natalie and three small children. He was a huge blessing to the new missionaries arriving in Mexico, serving as their Spanish instructor.
Please pray for Natalie as she makes difficult decisions in the next few days and for her parents, missionaries Marshal and Joy Millikan, as they go through the grieving process together.
