Missionaries Ed and Debbie Jurimas arrived in Manila last week to begin adjusting to the culture of the Philippines, where they will minister.
From the moment they ventured out to the main street, their senses were assaulted by various smells: diesel exhaust, open sewers and market smells -- none of which are pleasant.
As they boarded a jeepney -- a local mode of transportation -- they found themselves crowded in with more than 20 people, which included people hanging off the back. It was a real cultural awakening for space-conscious Americans.
"Getting around is an art and quite fun. The people are very friendly," the Jurimas wrote.
Every experience was new. The climate, culture, food and cars were very different from those they were used to in America, though they did find some familiar American eating places, and discovered they could find almost anything they need in the malls.
At a nearby open market they saw a variety of items being sold in side-by-side stalls.
Pray for Ed and Debbie as they adjust to the new culture and language. Pray that they will soon feel and home and be ready to take their place in the ministry of bringing the Gospel to tribal groups who have never heard about Jesus.
