When learning a culture and language, you're going to slip up from time to time. Missionary Angie Button, studying with her husband Jon in Portugal before they go to Mozambique, has been reminded of that lately.
At a recent Bible study at her landlord's house, Angie brought cookie bars that were a little gooey in the center, since she's still learning to use Celsius instead of Fahrenheit. "When everyone ate them," Angie wrote, "my landlord announced that I should cook more. I interpreted it as I need to cook the cookies more, not that I needed to cook more often."
Another evening, Angie wrote, "As we were going home, our landlord said he would see us tomorrow, if God wants (their version of Lord willing). Trying to make a joke, I said I would bring him the rent money tomorrow, if God wants." The landlord thought Angie had misunderstood, and started explaining it and how it related to James 4:15: Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that."
Also recently, "whenever I needed to ask for a place to nurse Jackson, instead of saying he needed to nurse, I said that I needed to nurse."
Through this Angie has had fun, and she and her husband continue to study culture and language in Portugal. Please pray for Jon and Angie as they learn. |
