Some of you have been asking us where we will be serving overseas. We would really appreciate your prayers as we make this decision. This summer we will be moving from Missouri to Arizona where Mike will be given advanced flight and maintenance instruction for flying in rugged conditions.
We have not made a decision regarding our country assignment because it depends on the needs of New Tribes Mission Aviation (NTMA). We would like to go where there is a real need for pilots. We have been informed by NTMA that they need pilots in the Philippines, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. The need is great in this region because most of the unreached people groups live in very inaccessible areas. Each country has groups of scattered islands and mountainous terrain that make travel for church planters impossible without the use of an aircraft. Mike would be flying to about 20-60 different villages where church planters work. In order for them to live in such remote areas, they depend on the pilot for transportation, mail, food, medical evacuations, and encouragement in the church-planting process.
A missionary couple told us recently that one of their most encouraging times living in the village was when the pilot would come and drop off supplies. One time the pilot spent the night in their home and they enjoyed the needed company until late into the night. We have always wanted to pick a country where the flight schedule will allow room for time to encourage the church planters.
We really need God’s guidance as we decide which country to serve in. NTMA leaves this decision up to us but is asking us to wait until August 2007 to finalize it with them. Due to the time it takes to learn the language (1.5 years) and the time for Mike to get licensed to fly in these countries, we will be committing to serve in one country long-term. We are excited about the possibilities in southern Asia. We would really appreciate you praying for God’s clear direction as we make this decision.
