Tarahumara believers have recently started to choose names almost immediately after their babies are born.
Traditionally, the Tarahumaras named their children after the saints whose day they were born on no matter how unusual it sounded or whether they liked it or not.
When asked what her new baby's name was, a Tarahumara woman responded by saying "I don't know… I haven't got a calendar." Babies go for months, even up to a year, without being named after their saint because the families do not have calendars.
But the Tarahumara believers have found freedom in being able to choose names they want for their children.
The believers have chosen to name their children after important people in the Bible such as Elijah, Nehemiah, Rebekah, Miriam, and other Old Testament names signifying that they realize the importance of their child's namesake.
Praise God that the Tarahumara believers have realized the importance of what they have learned from the Bible. |
