Jennifer's Fears
by Dena McMaster
Part Three: Missionaries Now
"Well, I'm ready to go now," said John. "I'm going to read a lot more of these stories. But, Mom, how can I be a missionary right now?"

"John, that's our next project. We'll be going into missionary training in January, but we don't have to wait to get involved with missionary work."

"How can we do that?" Jennifer asked.

John reads his Bible"Well, let's think about missionaries," Mrs. Harris said. "What do they do?"

"They learn the language, and help sick people, and translate the Bible," John said.

"And they teach people about God," Jennifer added.

"That's the most important thing, Jennifer," Mrs. Harris said. "It's true that missionaries learn the language, help sick people, and translate the Bible so they can teach people about God. We already know the language of our neighbors, and we already have the Bible in their language. So how can we be missionaries here?"

"We can tell people about God!" John said, excited.

"How do we do that?" Mrs. Harris asked.

John and Jennifer looked her with a puzzled expression. "Well, we just tell them, don't we?" Jennifer asked.

"Just with our words?" Mrs. Harris asked.

John and Jennifer caught on. "The way we live needs to tell them about Jesus too," John said.

"That's right," said Mrs. Harris. "We need to do both. People need to see Jesus in us, and they need to hear about Him from us. And we need to remember that He makes it possible to live for Him, and to tell people about Him. We can't do or say the right things; we have to spend time with Him and let Him do and say the right things through us."

"I don't really understand that," Jennifer said.

"That's OK," Mrs. Harris said. "It can be hard to understand. The important thing is that you spend time reading the Bible, and praying and thinking about what God is saying, and what He wants you to do. As you grow in Him, it will make more sense."

"We're also going to help missionaries in other lands ..."

Can you, too, be a missionary right where you are? How can John and Jennifer help missionaries in other lands? What can you do to help? Get some ideas when you ...
