Jennifer's Fears
by Dena McMaster
Part One: Oh No!
As Lindy Harris talked on the phone, she glanced into the den and saw that John and Jennifer were still playing on the computer. She brought her conversation with Mrs. Davis to a close. "Yes, Nancy, the Pastor will be there early tomorrow morning before you go into surgery. OK, take care; we'll be praying for you."

Just then Pastor Dave Harris walked in. "Lindy, it's time for a family meeting. We need to tell the kids about the decision we've made about missions."

"You're right, Dave," Lindy replied. "I'll call the kids in."

Jen and Mrs. Harris talkWhen they were all settled in the living room, Pastor Harris said, "John and Jen, your mom and I have made a very important decision. We are going to begin training with New Tribes Mission in January. God has laid the people of West Africa on our hearts and we want to go there and tell them of Jesus' love."

Everyone in the room was silent for a few minutes. Tears began streaming down John's face. He said, "Mom and Dad, I had just told God that I would be a missionary for Him when I grow up. I am so excited! I can't wait to go to the mission field!"

Jennifer said nothing, so her parents gave her time to think and to let the shock wear off.

When the Harrises sat down to dinner, everyone was chatting and discussing the plans except Jennifer. Lindy Harris saw that and was concerned, so right after dinner, she followed Jennifer to her room. "What's troubling you, Jen?" she asked.

"Mom, I'm scared," said Jennifer, "I don't know much about missionaries. I don't even know what they do!"

"You're right, Jen," Lindy said. "It wasn't fair to spring this on you without preparation. Tomorrow we start Project Missionary Research! ..."

Would you feel more like John or Jennifer? What do you think is scaring Jennifer? What do you think Jennifer should do? What should Mrs. Harris do?
