TIME ON THE ALASKA RAILROAD

Alaska Railroad

Alaska Railroad

August 6, 2007

by Jonie Mellinger

My aunt and uncle had received free tickets to ride the Alaska Railroad from Fairbanks to Anchorage and back again. They were generous enough to let us use those tickets to ride the train!

Through the twelve hours each way, Jason took over 400 pictures of the beautiful Alaskan scenery. It was a great time to relax, read books, and I even got some knitting in. It was so good to spend that time alone together.

This is a great shot that Jason got of the Alaska Railroad and the blooming fireweed.

My brother and his wife met us at the train station in Anchorage, where we headed to some good friends of ours to borrow their vehicle. The four of us all drove down to Cooper's Landing (about 2 hours southeast  of Anchorage) for a 25 mile hike on the Russian River Trail. We parked our friends' car at one end and then drove to the other end to begin our camping and hiking.

At about five o'clock early one morning, our dog, Shelby, woke us up growling. Jason and I jumped out of bed to see two brown bears (grizzlies) running down the river.

We all had to wear backpacks hauling our gear. Even Shelby had to carry her own food. We got this pack for her on ebay--great deal!

We saw a number of glaciers.

Near the end of the hike, we reached some beautiful falls where the salmon were jumping upstream.

After our hike, we headed back to Anchorage and stayed with some more of our friends and were able to take needed showers!

We headed back to the train station and came back home after a much needed break.
