BE YOURSELF AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE

No matter what you are referring to, 2,500 is still a big number, isn’t it?

It’s definitely a smaller number than 3,000, and that’s a good thing. See, for years, New Tribes Mission has estimated there were 3,000 people groups without access to the Gospel. More recent figures have allowed us to estimate the number has dropped to 2,500.

Praise the Lord!

But that number can still be rather overwhelming. I mean, with 2,500 people groups still unreached, what can you or I do to make a difference?

Alberto found one answer: doing for God what he does for a living.

In Chihuahua, Mexico – as in many hospitals outside the USA – the patients’ families must buy and deliver all the medicine a patient needs. Many families cannot afford that. So when a missionary brings someone in, the missionary often gets the list of all the medicines for a number of patients.

That’s what happened to Andrew Ferguson recently when he brought a Southern Tepehuan girl named Alma in for treatment.

“The first list I was given for Alma was so long, I became a little concerned,” Andrew wrote. “It was going to cost in the vicinity of 6,000 pesos ($600).”

Andrew’s pastor in Chihuahua put him in touch with Alberto, a pharmacist. Alberto was able to determine which medicines were Alma’s, and to calculate what quantities she would need during her stay. This came to a much more reasonable 1400 pesos ($140).

He even delivered the medicines she needed each day, protecting Andrew from the awkwardness of providing only a portion of what he had been asked for, and ensuring that Alma would get the medicine instead of another patient.

Alberto helped in the efforts to plant a church among the Southern Tepehuan people by doing what he already knows how to do, and then going the extra mile.

It’s highly likely you could do the same. You could do so through NTM, for six months to four years, or as a career. You could even go for six months to four years and then decide whether to make it a career move, if you and NTM’s leaders in the country agree.
