Daily Scripture

"The king shall have joy in Your strength, O Lord; and in your salvation how greatly shall he rejoice! You have given him his heart's desire, and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah."

Psalm 21:1-2

OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOODS

Missionaries are willing to make sacrifices, so that others, like this Marubo woman, can know God.

Your dad had an easier time getting to school, barefoot in the snow uphill both ways.

It’s taking Melody Rich a week to get to school.

Last week Melody, 15, and her parents, Paul and Sheryl, left a village deep in the Brazilian rainforest where they serve among the Marubo people.

First they loaded their things and themselves into a dugout canoe and fired up the tiny outboard motor. For a day and a half they went upstream, stopping under a shelter for the night.

Then they beached the canoe and started walking. The hike from their river to a ranch on another river will take three or four days. In the wet season it would be more difficult, but right now they will encounter much less water – only a few stream crossings and a few inches of water on the trail, for a few miles at a time. Much of the rest of the time they’ll be climbing over logs and scrambling through branches and vines.

“We will take all the food we need … on our backs,” wrote Sheryl Rich before they set out.

If all has gone well and keeps going well, they’ll spend tonight at a friend’s small ranch and tomorrow they’ll try to find a boat heading in the right direction with room to take them on another day’s trip.

“Hope we can get a boat with a cover on it because of the sun,” Sheryl wrote.

This will bring them to a city where they can catch an airline flight to the city where Melody goes to school with other children of missionaries in Brazil.

When Melody is settled, Paul and Sheryl will return to the village deep in the jungle. They’ll continue to disciple the small number of Marubo believers, and translate God’s Word and Bible lessons. Isolated. Remote. Separated from their youngest child.

Are you in awe of the sacrifices that the Riches the make? I am. I’m humbled by their commitment.

But they’d be embarrassed to read that. People who know the Riches have told me that they would point you and me to the sacrifice God made for us. They would talk about His love for us and for those who have yet to know Him.

God is what make obeying God’s command to make disciples of all nations worth everything.

We’re committed to that, and your involvement with us in ministry tells us you are too. Thank you!

Would you please join us in trusting God for the funds we need to be effective in ministry? Specifically, we are asking God to provide:

  • $2,000 in one-time gifts, so we can make a trip to visit ministry partners and find new ministry partners.
  • $1,000 in additional monthly giving, so we can begin to properly fund our ministry.

You may make a secure gift online, or find out how to give by check or mail >>
