After a much needed break from daily teaching in Papua New Guinea, Gary and Esther Smith returned to conduct the Dinangat tribe's first believers meeting.
At the end of the meeting, the people attended their community meeting, which typically covers topics such as announcements in the tribe. Gary and Esther observed the meeting was very different from the usual routine.
"Usually people are just reprimanding one another and you rarely, if ever, hear from the big man of the village -- Esingke," the Smiths wrote. "This time, the two [male] leaders of the village went back and forth over what to do…[and] how to apply these truths to their lives."
The new believers of the tribe are very excited about God and describe the teaching as "true and true!"
"The leaders, nor the people, want the teaching to stop because they see it as the very words of God," the Smiths wrote.
Gary and Esther are now working on discipleship with the tribe. They will meet weekly with the believers to teach them about their new life with Christ.
The summer months will consist of reviewing the highlights of what was learned during evangelistic Bible teaching, with an emphasis on the believers' security in Christ.
In August and September, the book of Acts will be taught, and in November and December portions of the Epistles will be taught.
Throughout the year, Gary and Esther will continue Bible translations and their informal discipleship as they interact with the new believers and help them learn to apply their new found faith to daily living.
