Can you imagine life without being able to read and write? Can you imagine a church without the Bible?
Missionaries ministering among the Palawano people in the Philippines know that a strong literacy program is essential to a strong future indigenous church, and they are praising God that the Palawanos are taking ownership of the program.
When a work team of five young people came from Elise and Becky Long's home church in Australia, the Palawano people labored with them to build a two-room literacy building. The people have been proudly showing visitors where they will be taught to read and write their own language.
The rooms, built underneath the Long's house, are in full use already as the Palawanos work with Elise and Becky to compose stories for the first Palawano reading books.
Tribal leaders made sure that people were available to work with the literacy team when consultants Sandy Mikolavich and Lori Morely flew in from Papua New Guinea for a week-long workshop to prepare the first literacy materials. Their efforts produced the first two primers for the Palawano people.
"We have a long road ahead of us to prepare the whole program and supplementary reading books before we can begin to teach," wrote Becky, "so keep praying for us as we work towards completion of the first Palawano literacy program.
