When a Dinangat man read Genesis 37 in his own language he laughed with delight that his language was written down and he could understand it.
The team of missionaries working among the Dinangat people of Papua New Guinea have just begun the translation process. New Tribes Mission has developed a series of steps for translation and missionary Ralf Schlegel has just completed step one. Missionaries Jeremiah and April Markley and Gary and Esther Smith are helping Ralf with each stage of the process.
They started with the three small booklets required to begin translation. One is Genesis 37, another is Animals of Israel, and a third is about the danger of flies.
Then they took the booklets to several Dinangats to see if they could understand what was written. After several checks with different Dinangat men they felt ready to have a translation consultant come check their work.
One man sat in Gary's office and tried to read the Animals of Israel booklet. It took him two hours and he was able read only a few pages. But he was excited just to see his own language written down.
Gary told him that God has an important message for the Dinangats and soon they will be able to read it for themselves.
Pray for the team of missionaries working with the Dinangats as they begin to put God's Word into the heart language of the people. Pray also that as the Dinangats read God's Word, they will understand the message God has for them and trust Christ as Savior.
