In a village of almost 300 Bagwido people in Papua New Guinea, missionaries begin evangelistic Bible teaching today, hoping that many will attend and continue to listen to God's Word until the Gospel is presented sometime in mid March.
"The village as a whole seems very open to hearing God's Word," wrote Brian Holmquist.
"There is a whole gamut of beliefs as to what this teaching is really about. There are a few folks here in the village who still believe that we, the missionaries, are departed dead ancestors who died, shed our black skin and came back to them as white spirits."
God's Word has already been making an impression on the Bagwido men who are working with Brian to translate Scripture and write Bible lessons. One of them, Jonathan, told Brian on Sunday, that he knows God's Word is true.
Today's introduction to the teaching included a geography lesson to stretch the people's thinking about the world outside of their island. As the lessons continue throughout this week, the people will hear about the origin and preservation of the Bible, God and His attributes and Creation.
Please pray that the people will listen attentively, attend the meetings diligently and give careful thought to what they are hearing. Pray too that Brian and his co-worker, Mark Woodard, will have the strength to keep up with the demands of the schedule.
