NOURISHING A GROWING BODY OF BELIEVERS

Jonathan Kopf considers it `awesome` to be able to help the Hewa move from darkness to light.

October 18, 2007

by David Bell

Hewa believers in Papua New Guinea have an insatiable desire for God's Word.

"Though the Hewa church is not huge, its members are showing beautiful signs of spiritual growth," wrote missionary Jonathan Kopf. "They still want to meet seven days a week to hear lessons from the Bible. It's amazing to see."

Jonathan teaches Monday through Friday and then some of the Hewa men reteach the lessons on Saturday and Sunday. The review allows any who missed the daily lessons the opportunity to hear.

Recently Yanis, Ken, Eyaka, Puka and Pol talked about what they were learning. Their eyes were bright with excitement as they concluded, "Before when we heard these stories from the Bible, we thought that they were just really good stories. But now we are starting to really understand that they aren't just stories like the ones our ancestors have told us.

"Instead, each story has a meaning that applies directly to our lives. When Jesus talked, it wasn't just to tell interesting stories. It was so that we could really understand what God is like and how we should live. Each of the points of His stories comes right to each one of us where we are at today."

"It is awesome," Jonathan wrote, "to be able to help these people move from spiritual darkness to the light of God's love."

Foko's recent prayer shows the heart of the Hewa believers. "Father, these words that we have been hearing are not from our ancestors and they are not from the Caucasians. I realize that they are your words, direct from your ground (Heaven). I now realize this so I am listening to your words. You are my true Father so I am now listening to your words and following them."

As the believers hear more of God's Word they are becoming more aware of the need to carry this message to other Hewa villages. Two men from other villages, Matiyu and Maikol, keep asking for someone to come teach their people. Eyaka and Ken expressed a desire to take the Gospel to these two places as soon as they have been taught through Acts and Romans.

Please pray that the Hewa believers will continue to grow through God's Word and spread His message to others.
