The first day of evangelistic Bible teaching had come for the Siawi people.
The rain didn't keep the crowd away.
And the building couldn't hold the crowd.
The meeting had already started when the village leader, Yeneb, came up the path shouting to the people about not building a bigger building. "Are we pigs that we have to sit on the ground?" he said.
That afternoon several men began adding an extension to the building.
On Monday, missionary Jason Swanson taught the first lesson about the Bible: how we got it, who wrote it, and other foundational issues.
After the meeting, missionaries were encouraged as several people asked for copies of the book of Genesis, which has been translated into the Siawi language. The missionary team of Jason and his wife, Shannon, Tom and Danielle Brendle and translation consultant Linda Kreig were amazed and pleased that a few of the Siawis had taught themselves to read.
Lessons will continue Monday through Friday each week, beginning with Creation and culminating in the death, burial and resurrection of Christ.
Jason and Tom will both be involved in the teaching. As for the first teaching session, "Jason was able to speak clearly and did well in presenting the lesson," wrote Linda.
Pray that the teaching will continue unhindered. The missionaries do have a concern about a mumps epidemic that is starting in the village. Pray!
