Missionaries Jonathan and Susan Kopf and Keith and Angie Copley are back in the tribe and hard at work after being evacuated from their ministry among the Hewa people in January.
Much unrest still exists in the tribe after the murder of Tomas. The once-peaceful setting is different now as almost every village boy and man is decorated in war paint and keeps his weapons with him at all times.
Many of the Hewas are scattered in the jungle, living in small groups. Even those left in the village prefer to spend most of their time away so that they don't have to deal with the threats of pay-back killings or house burnings from the nearby Paiela tribe.
Among those who chose to stay are a few of the strongest believers and the missionaries have had good opportunities to spend more individual time with them.
"We are happy about this," wrote Jonathan, "and yet [we] are torn because we know that while they are here with us, they are putting themselves in a more vulnerable position. We are praying that the Lord will bring good things out of this tough situation."
Some of the Hewa leaders have been talking about building new houses further from the Paielan people. This would not be difficult for these semi-nomadic people, but it poses a significant problem for the missionaries' ability to pursue ministry.
Jonathan is currently translating the book of Acts, trying to get as much done as possible before the Kopf's home assignment begins. Susan is working hard to get another literacy class underway and is helping Jonathan with translation. Keith is writing Bible lessons in preparation for further teaching.
"Seriously pray that the Lord would bring back stability in our village setting," wrote Jonathan. "Pray that the threats aimed at our people would subside so that our Hewa friends can turn their attention from defending themselves, to growing in their new-found faith."
