HEWA TESTIMONIES EXCITE MISSIONARIES

Yanis portrays Jesus

October 11, 2005

Several Hewas took part in acting out the death, burial and resurrection of Christ as more than three months of evangelistic Bible teaching concluded Sunday.

Missionaries ended the teaching by giving their own testimonies of how they had put their faith in Christ alone for salvation. They then asked the people to consider their response to the message.

"Jesus did all the hard work to open the door for us so that we could be with God," Eyaka and Yanis excitedly said. "Now we don't have anything hard to do. Our responsibility is just to believe!"

"I used to work hard to get help from the benevolent jungle spirits," said Was. "But now Jesus has washed all the wrong things that I have done away. Everyone needs to hear this message. God put our sins on Jesus and then He died. Now after we die, our bodies will rot in the grave but our spirits can be with God."

Letonai, who told missionaries that he has asked God to erase all the bad things that he had done, said, "If he already did all the work, then what kind of work is there for us to do? Work for the banana tree spirits won't help us."

"Jesus took our wrongs on Him and died," said Ken. "God was happy with that and now we have a way to be friends with God. God won't be angry with us any more because Jesus died to wipe away the wrong things that we have done."

"I am very afraid," Yoke said. "I do wrong all the time. I get angry and hate. A long time ago, Judas and the Jewish pastors, they were angry with Jesus and betrayed Him and had him put to death. I am very sick of what they did. Jesus died for our sins but many of us Hewa people are not really convinced to the point of giving our lives to God."

"Our hearts are hard like the Egyptians," said Lifas. So many of us don't seem to care about what Jesus did for us. All we have to do is believe that what Jesus did for us was enough to take care of our problem with God. We need to believe this in our hearts."

Yanis, who portrayed Jesus on the cross during a skit, held nightly meetings in his house to review the lessons that were taught each day. He said, "Jesus is now our road and our ladder to get to God. We have a way to be friends with God now."

"Jesus did a big thing on the cross and it makes me in awe. Why didn't more people come to hear this message?" Oyomo said.

Jonathan and Susan Kopf and Keith and Angie Copley are now rejoicing in the testimonies they've heard from the Hewa people.

"Please pray for us as we continue to meet with the different Hewa people that have heard the Gospel message," wrote Jonathan and Susan. "Pray that the Lord will convict their hearts … and that they will respond to Him in faith."
