HEWAS EAGER TO READ

October 4, 2004

A two-and-a-half hour literacy session each morning was not enough for Hewa students.

To satisfy their desire missionary Susan Kopf has started a casual learning time in the afternoons.

Friday she told the class she would be handing out a Hewa newspaper on Monday. When she asked if anyone knew what a newspaper was, one man quickly responded, "That's what I roll my tobacco in so I can smoke it."

Susan couldn't restrain her laughter.

The newspaper is being written by Susan and her students. It will contain short stories about events happening among the Hewas.

"It should be fun and a good way for them to learn to write stories," Susan wrote.

Pray that the students in this pilot literacy program will make good progress in their reading and writing abilities and create a desire in others to follow their example.

These are the very first Hewas to learn to read and write and they are emphatic that they are learning "because we want to read God's Word."

Pray especially for three students who missed more than a week of classes to attend a funeral in another village. Susan is concerned that they will not become discouraged about catching up with the rest of the class.
