After just a couple days, not even being able to walk - just sitting, laying down and occasionally dragging herself around with her hands - our foster baby developed severe blisters on the backs of her heels.
We have had to discontinue the use of the braces for at least two weeks until her feet have a chance to heal. The braces have had a heel grip inserted to try to avoid this in the future.
Since the braces were received, we have sought a second opinion. We are still waiting for a pool of doctors at this second hospital to meet and give us their recommendation.
The initial reaction from this second hospital is that braces are not likely to be effective. We knew that from the first doctor, but he felt it was worth trying for 8-9 months before deciding to do surgery.
Both hospitals are telling us that surgery to place a metal plate over one side of her growth plates is the treatment most likely to help.
We need wisdom in evaluating the recommendation of the two hospitals. - Is trying the braces and delaying the surgery worth it? What if one hospital recommends a different type of brace to try?
