A Burden for Remote Tribal People! "What do you do when your children grow up and leave you? And you feel that they are doing more for the Lord than you are doing."
This is what Darryl and Becky were thinking in 1992. Later, a former NTM missionary shared at one of the churches near their home town about remote tribal people living in PNG who had never heard of God's love for them in their own language. This burdened their hearts. A few months later, they sold their home, left their loved ones, and entered the NTM training. Five years later, they arrived in PNG.
Darryl and Becky Jordan have lived in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea since 1997. Since 1998 they have been ministering to the Wusuraambyan people. These people live in the remote mountainous region of Papua New Guinea.
Their coworkers are Andrew and Cathy Goud along with Terry and Rosie Banman. Our missionary team is doing language/culture study, literacy, Bible translation, and church planting. The Wusuraambyan people live simply. They were previously hunters and gatherers. Now they are subsistence farmers. They are some of the poorest people in the world.
Their annual income is less than $100 by growing coffee.
They live in small one room bamboo huts..
They eat sweet potatoes, greens, and taro that they grow in their gardens. The Creation to Christ Chronological lessons were first presented in the Fall of 2005 after years of language and culture study. There were over 10 people who became believers. Subsequently, these believers presented the Chronological lessons in a neighboring village. There were about 30 people who came to know the Lord as their personal Savior. In 2006, the national believers, themselves, taught the Creation to Christ lessons for the third time with much enthusiasm. Over 60 people attended daily. Seventeen people were baptized in February 2007 as a result of these outreaches. Another 19 were baptized in November 2007. There were 70 people who were taught to read and write in our fourth literacy class taught in 2007. This class was taught by two of our national believers. The Gospel of Mark was translated and printed in 2006. The book of Acts was completed and checked by a outside translation consultant in February 2008. It should be printed later this year. In January 2008, the believers began teaching our fourth outreach. This year we are blessed with four national teachers. About 80 people come four days a week for two hour lessons. They come even when the weather is bad and sit on small stones or on the ground. These lessons should conclude in May with the story of the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. Also, we have a large literacy class this year which is being taught by Jaakurya, one of our national leaders. Our goal for this year, 2008, is to translate the Epistle of the Romans. Also, we plan to have an outreach to the Wusuraambyan people who live to the north of us in the not too distant future. We are grateful that the Lord has allowed us to come and minister to the Wusuraambyan people. It is a joy to see the believers who have heard and responded to the message of salvation through Christ.
