"We have had a whirlwind of a week our first week back in the tribe," wrote missionary George Olson, "Activities started the moment we landed in the tribe with an emergency air flight."
George and Ginny flew into the Palawano village in the Philippines last week just in time for the pilot to evacuate a villager who was very ill with tuberculosis.
After unpacking their boxes and getting settled, Ginny began helping at the clinic. People were coming from all over the area due to an outbreak of measles.
On Friday, missionary pilot Ben Hart returned with some needed supplies and the tuberculosis patient who had recovered. Medical needs, setting up their home and beginning language study once again made the week seem to fly by.
Finally George was able to begin studying the culture and language in earnest -- and he found that learning the Palawano language can be very interesting.
"You ask someone a simple question in Tagalog, like 'What is this?' and you hold up a cup," wrote George. "The person you ask starts off in a long discourse in Palawano on all the things you do with cups. In the middle of the 500 words he just threw at you in paragraph form, one of them is the word for 'cup'. You have to pick it out, write it down, and remember it later."
"Then he says, 'You're so smart, you're going to speak our language within a month.' I hope he is not too disappointed at the end of the month."
Please pray for George and Ginny as they continue to minister among the Palawano people.
