JAR RELATED TO SPIRIT WORSHIP

This Palawano man gave George and his son a tour of his garden.

Missionary George Olson, along with his son Isaac, recently had an odd experience with a jar while going with a Southern Palawano man to the man's garden.

The Palawano man led them up while carrying two coconut tree seedlings and an empty jar. He pointed out a specific spot where he wanted the Olsons to stand before filling a jar with water and putting a leaf in it.

Moving to where the Olsons couldn't see him, the Palawano took a few minutes before calling over George and Isaac and planting the seedlings.

On the way back, George asked the names of the plants they passed, and the man answered and told them a little bit about each. They reached where the Palawano had left the jar, and George asked what it was.

"Oh, that's nothing," the Palawano man said. "Come now, let's keep on walking."

A few evenings later, George was with a sick man in his house. The witch doctor came in and had him drink water with a leaf floating in it from exactly the same kind of jar that was used up in the garden.

George wrote, "So I know that there was some kind of spirit offering or something going on there. I was a bit surprised, though, that my friend was a bit embarrassed to discuss the offering and the jar when I pointed and asked about it. We don't want to draw major conclusions too early in the culture and language study, but this is something that we will have a chance to observe more as we get to know the people more."
